It’s 3 weeks old, heard something hit it while I was driving to NH for work, no BlueCruise of course, but that’s a separate issue. Assuming a rock, hit the center of my windshield and now it has a noticeable chip in it. Is there a fix for a chip or will my only option be to replace the windshield? If so, anyone have a clue on cost? I’m not doing it right away anyway, still digesting the cost of the vehicle.

Most chips can be repaired. And most insurance companies will waive your deductible for a chip repair. Call your insurance company and find out. Waiting is not advisable because it can spread.

I was also told that about the herpes, but on a serious note, how does a chip get repaired?

Just put some invisible tape on it, so it doesnt get more dirt in the crack/chip. If it's small enough, should be repairable quite easily

A clear epoxy is injected into the chip. You can buy a kit to do it yourself if you’d prefer.
Which, since the insurance company will try a repair for free as you noted, is not a route most should attempt.

You've never had a chip in any windshield before?

No, I’ve been pretty lucky for a long time, even with Wranglers which are famous for chipped/cracked windshields.

You can spend time figuring out if it can be fixed, or simply go through your insurance company. Mine ties their website to Safelite, and it asks questions including measuring and where crack is. If it's not fixable, they replace it.

Many people don't investigate changing their insurance when they buy an expensive vehicle, or any vehicle. Many states allow you to get a separate glass deductible, and the cost is low. I have zero deductible on glass. Mach-E has the windshield, and roof, that can get hit by a stone.

Note that if the windshield cracks, that's a flaw in your crash protection. Chips will turn into cracks if not taken care of.

It sounds stupid, it seems like the window on this car is ā€œsofterā€. We’ve had our car for a month (1300 miles) and we have three or four noticeable spots on the window where rocks have hit it and chipped it. The chips are a few mm but one is right in my eye line and it drives me nuts. They just look like tiny spots but if you feel them they’re definitely not just superficial debris

I believe the aerodynamics of this car leads to significant rock chips, both on the front bumper and windshield. I've had to replace my pano roof from a rock chip already and I have three small chips in the windshield. I also have 4 or 5 small rock chips in the plastic bumper. Seems like every time I drive I hear another one pinging off. So frustrating.

I had a chip that didn’t get repaired fast enough, and now it’s cracked. Stupid me.
