On occasion (a couple times a week, say), I press the button to close the trunk, the trunk starts to close, and at about 3/4 down, it stops and that it. It used to also honk the horn twice, but I shut off a setting, I think it was "mislock chirp", and now it is silent when it stops 3/4 of the way down (thank God - honking the horn is the worst decision ever).

Anyone have any idea of why this is happening?

Is it always in the garage with the garage door closed when this happens? Perhaps something is triggering the proximity sensor and stopping for safety? Doesn’t look like it from your pic, but that’s one possibility. I close mine with the garage door open and always fine.

It happens to me too and not in the garage. I think standing close to it triggers it, not sure what sensors it uses to determine that.

Good thought. But i am pretty sure it has happened outside also.

Like others, i have noticed it mostly happens when i press the close button and then immediately walk to the drivers door. It doesn't happen when I stand behind the car. So you may be onto something with triggering the proximity sensor, but the trigger might be me!

Phone/key is left in the trunk? It is supposed to do that if it detects key in trunk when closing (by under fluor antenna) since trunk is separately locked to prevent being locked out of vehicle

Only time I had this happen was w/ a vehicle behind me. The ultrasonics may be used to look behind the vehicle and prevent a closing if it determines something is close. I did walk by the left sensor when and it stopped so it may in fact be using the ultrasonic sensors to prevent contact with something. Maybe it's a child safety feature in case someone suddenly approaches as it's closing?

No, although I have tried leaving my phone in the trunk (I use PaaK exclusively - never carry a fob) and the trunk does the exact same thing, which is a good feature. Maybe the proximity sensor is detecting the phone if I stand to close to the trunk while it is closing?

Hi there, I'd be happy to look into your Mach-E concerns on my end. Will you send us a message with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into things on my end.

Mine does this pretty frequently also. I think this is what is happening when it occurs to me:

  • Walk up to locked car
  • Open tailgate without unlocking doors (doors unlock automatically for tailgate)
  • Press tailgate close button and walk towards drivers door to get in (or at least away from tailgate)
  • Tailgate/Car/Locks/Body Control Module thinks something should be locked but it isnt, --> error
I don't seem to get this error when I unlock the doors on the car first, then go to the tailgate. So I think this has a lot to do with PAAK and the locks not being certain of what state they should be in, and some mismatch somewhere in the software.

I'm planning to ask my dealer to check FDRS for updates for this issue when I am in for 20k mile service in a month or so. I'm not sure but I think this would fall under body control module updates, which I believe I have one of available.

Your sequence seems to be similar to mine when this happens.

Just now happened to me. First time. In open parking lot. I use PaaK exclusively and at this time the FordPass app is crashing a lot so maybe that is related.

Mine does this on occasion. When it does it (mine still honks twice), it usually repeats the behavior multiple times before I can get it to close. There have been occasions where I got sick of it not closing on multiple tries that I just close it manually then lock the car. I have no solution since it only happens sporadically. ?‍♂?

It’s not really worth taking it to the dealer for since i can just close it manually. I’m used to that from all of my other cars. ?‍♂?
