Seems like it's also spreading it up here to Minneapolis more. We get snow up here pretty good but not like what the past two years have been like. Just got 19" here officially from this storm. Slowly digging out. Might take the car out to do some doughnuts in the parking lot once it's plowed out. lol
Careful...There was an early thread on here--can't remember who started it--about someone screwing up their Mustang by doing doughnuts in the snow wet grass... All the traction control etc went haywire if I remember correctly.

Correction, in wet grass, not snow.

Yeah I saw that, wet grass is very different than snow/ice for sure. Plus I think most forget to turn off the driver assist features to prevent the systems from monitoring. Sadly my window of opportunity is closing now that the city is getting streets plowed and I still can't get the car out of the garage due to the ice on the steep ramp into it. (Underground garage that was not designed the best for Minnesota.)

It was fun to drive around in it today, here are a couple of photos from a Facebook friend showing how deep we got it between yesterday and today. Some of that is drifting

I really wonder how the stock GTPEs Pirellis will perform in the cold.
Don't do it -- I once was on summer tires in a Mazda RX-8 on I-280 in the hills when temps got unexpectedly around 40 degrees at night, and driving on summer tires in those temps leave the tires like rocks with much less grip. I hit some black ice, had the back go squirrelly on me, and had to change my undies when I got home.

The temps we're having now in the daytime highs in the bay area right now are really not good for those stock Pirellis.

You are correct cold temperatures noticeably reduce traction but you can drive. They will perform like completely bald tires in a torrential downpour. The compound will be hard and the tires may feel extremely stiff or even you may feel flat spots for the first few miles you drive. Somewhere like the bay area where it's rare to get cold temps be extra careful and you should be OK. Now if you add wintery conditions like snow and ice they are dangerous.
Temps in the Bay Area at night dip into the low 40s in the winter typically -- with this current weather cycle this week -- and honestly this winter -- temps have gotten far colder. Lows this week are in the high 30s, and daytime highs were 46 where I live.

It's really not a good idea to drive the stock Pirellis in these temps, esp with the rain we're having here as well.

I don't think that is accurate, summer tires apparently do better in rain than all-seasons. If it gets very cold while raining, that is different, but just a torrential downpour still within proper temps for summers to perform? You will be fine.
Let me take another stab at this. I am using a metaphor to show in the cold summer tires will act like bald tires do In the rain. They would have very little traction.

You are correct at summer temperatures summer tires are better than all season and / or Winter tires. But if it's around freezing and it rains they would be extremely slick. Usually tires warm up as you drive but in the rain they are considerably colder than air temperature

With this being the case I would switch out to an all season or all weather for cold rainy conditions. (If you do an all weather do either the cross climate or the Quatrac pro the others give up wet traction to enhance snow traction. Wouldn't think you would need snow traction in the bay area)

I am aware. It generally doesn’t get cold in the Bay Area, but the idea that summer tires don’t function at all when it’s cold can’t be true. It’s just not advisable.
I live in Europe where we get get snow every year. I will admit I dont know how that works but I will concur that summer tires on the snow are horrible. They are fine when it's cold, but they are not fine when there is snow. It's much easier when you have AWD car, but still - the breaking distance is horrible (like 5-10 times longer) and you really should not do any rapid movements or you will lose traction immediately and start doing uncontrolled "donuts".

Every couple years I am late to changing my set of tires from summer to winter, and when I have to drive 5 miles in the snow (before they spread salt and it melts) I get scared as hell and then I am really surprised how much of a difference it makes. Magic.

Maybe check out that new Vredestein Quatrac Pro EV I think it's made in a 255/50/19 and 255/45/20 that would work on the MME could be perfect for what you described

Did very well through an insane commute from Hillsboro to the west hills of Portland, OR. Lots of people driving into each other and off the road, never felt out of control. This was after coming back to the car an hour after parking it. Stock tires with 16k miles, AWD.

Same. Went out today and the car went through the snowy conditions better than a pick-up truck.
Only thing I was wondering was when 1pd braking was kicking in the car would make a clicking noise. Any idea what that is? Is it bad? Is it not a problem? Curious if anyone knows.

Probably the ABS brakes

Really? It also did it when I was trying to accelerate up a steep hill. It would stop if I wasn’t on the pedal, but I had to go up the hill.
ABS + Traction Control. Yes.

Yep, traction control uses the ABS breaks to stop the wheels from spinning in low traction conditions
