The Model Y vs. Mach-E rivalry only seems natural for this point in time. Once other BEV/PHEV crossovers hit the market, it'll just be another opportunity for a segment shootout by Motor Trend or Car & Driver.

The real market opportunity for Ford is luring RAV4 Prime and CR-V hybrids shoppers to the Mustang brand.

I think it's more the Escape hybrid and PHEV that Ford will be competing against those vehicles with.

It's fine for Ford to cannibalize its own lineup with the Mach-E. It's even better for Ford to capture market share from the two 600lbs gorillas in the crossover segment.

I don't see it as Ford cannibalizing their own lineup as much as supplementing it.

Some BEV sales will come out of ICE sales, of course, but the real competition is within segments. As such, the bigger competitor to the RAV4 and CR-V hybrids will be the Escape hybrid IMO. Just like the bigger competitor to the Mach-e will be the Model Y and other similar BEVs.

The BEV threshold is the higher bar for a potential customer to cross first more so than the choice of model. Meaning, they first have to decide if a BEV is even a good fit for their situation. If it is, they'll probably be looking at BEVs. If it isn't, they'll probably be looking at ICE or hybrid. Then decide which model within those lanes.

Maybe, there is some of that but if you believe Tesla's trade in information for the Model 3, they're very popular with BMW 3-series, Civics and Accords. I think there's a lot of potential for the MME to take sales from CR-V, RAV4 and others in the crossover segment.

But that's for people that have decided a BEV works for them and they wanna get one. Meaning, they're completely shifting categories and paradigms.

In some ways we're saying the same thing. Yes, BEV sales will displace ICE sales, for people that decide a BEV works for them. But again, I look at that decision as something superseding choice of model. Kinda like someone buying a truck. You FIRST make the decision that "Yes, I need a truck because it fits my needs now". THEN you decide which truck.

I look at it as model competition coming after you first decide the type of vehicle you need.

What is most interesting about the video to me is that, at approximately the 3:24 mark they point the camera at, and talk about the display in front of the driver specifically the remaining range and battery. The remaining range is 402 KM and the remaining battery is 93%.

Remaining Range
400 KM = 248 Miles

Remaining Battery
93% x 266 = 248 MIles

So, this seems to confirm that this model being shown has a total battery capacity of about 270 miles, which lines up with an AWD ER.

Let's hope it's the AWD and not an underperforming RWD.

If you watch the part of the video after they exit the car, you'll see AWD badges on the side and rear of the car, so I do believe.it is AWD.
Ah, good catch. I was actually half-joking, but at the same time, didn't know for sure.

I was a little disappointed in their overall take on the vehicle. Sounds like they were another of the "uphappy that they called it a Mustang" crowd.

Yeah. It does help to know, though the person Manning the camera and the guy in the grey shirt are from TFL Truck. Watch their vids on trucks and you'll see they are soft on anything not powerful enough to pull a horse trailer and not roomy enough to hold 4 six foot tall construction dudes. They are what I'd label as brand loyalists.

TFL is one of those channels that drives me bonkers. They can be very methodical in testing, and then suddenly they get all esoteric or 'feels' in their responses.

That guy doing most of the talking is as big as I am. There isn't a car on this planet that is comfortable in the back except maybe a limo, and then I have to crawl sideways through it which is just sexy as hell to watch. Saying the back is 'small' when you look like us is lame.

They get so fixated on EV too. The Model Y is not the competition for the Mach E. The Explorer, Escape, Traverse, Highlander, all of those are what they are after, not the Model Y.

As for those idiots who broke the pre-prod car, I love my X but some of the Tesla guys are such fanboys and so violent against anyone who won't buy into the cult. They flock around and attack anything not praising musk.

I've seen a few TFL video reviews that Tommy did and I like him. Not so much these guys though.

I look at that "competition" angle a little differently. I look at BEVs as a paradigm shift in relation to ICE vehicles. For some people they're a good fit, for others they're not. But that's independent of model. People first decide whether they want a BEV or an ICE (or a PHEV). (Like they do when deciding truck vs car vs van). Then they look at model competition. As such, I do think the model competition is Model Y vs Mach-e vs other BEVs. As it is between Escape vs CR-V vs RAV4, etc.
