I have my charge settings set so my car will start charging at 9 p.m. A few weeks ago I was out and got home about 11:00. I plugged in my MME and went to bed. The next day I went out for lunch. I back out of my driveway and started to drive off when I heard a ding from the dash. I looked down and see a Service Vehicle Soon message. I cleared the message and the wrench icon lit up. I noticed at this point the car didn't charge. Since I was already on my way and the car seemed to be driving normally, I continued to restaurant to pick up my lunch. When I came out from the restaurant and started the car, I noticed the wrench icon was no longer lit.
I got home and checked the Ford Pass app and there were two messages: one for charge fault and one for Powertrain Malfunction. I called my dealer but they weren't able to get it in for a couple weeks, which was last week. In the meantime, I kept driving it, and everything worked fine. After they had it a couple days, I got a call from the dealer that they had to order a battery charging unit, P/N LJ9Z-10B689-E. Unfortunately, the part is on back order. I took the car back and it's been driving fine until last night. I got back home about 9:30. I plugged the car in and it started charging. About 10-15 minutes later I get a charge fault message in the app. I went out to see the red ring on the charge port. I unplugged the car, let it sit for about 45 minutes, and plugged it back in. It charged fine.
As I thought about it, I realized between the two fault events, every time I drove the car, it had a chance to sit for a while before charging initiated. My theory, based on a sample size of two, is that when I try charging immediately after driving, everything is "hot" and the charging is heating it up further and tripping a sensor.
