I have no interest in having to remove my phone from my pocket. NFC is not the answer. The future lies with UWB.
I'm not saying either/or, but rather both. Because so Far, Ford has shown that there PAAK system is not up to standard when compared to their competition.

Some people on here would be happy for it to go away as they like to remind everyone it never works and you clearly have to be an idiot to be using it
I’ve had three PAAK failures in two years. Two of those were user induced, one was not. Works well and one less item to carry. I, for one, would not be happy to see PAAK vanish.

Ditch it yes... Start charging for it no, and there's no indication of that at all in the survey.

It's a pain point for them and likely causes more grief and support inquiries than any other feature on the car.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they ditched it because they can't reliably figure it out.

As for going to car key, they don't have the hardware for that and hopefully that never happens. Let's not be reliant on more 3rd party providers. Apple car key has had many issues preventing it from working and randomly stranding drivers.

The purse/wallet question makes me think they might go to key cards, which I would welcome as a backup.
They better not ditch it. Ford has been stripping this car of its features and I’m ready to jump brands if they keep doing it.

I haven’t heard of any reliability issues with CarKey, but our cars definitely don’t have the UWB hardware needed.

If they remove it I think they really need to reengineer the key they hand out. If I was forced to carry a key I would like to have it be credit card-sized no buttons.

Would love to have WAAK.
Please no. I’m working on getting rid of my wallet next. All I carry is my license and a credit card. Once my state starts supporting digital licenses I’m ditching the wallet.

I did the survey and am one of the negative ones. I don't care if they remove it or not, because I gave up on it months ago. I do like to be able to lock, unlock, etc. which requires PaaK to be set up.

After renting a Tesla this past winter (because I had to drive somewhere with no DC fast chargers that weren’t Tesla) I saw that Phone as a Key can work, and work really well. In 4 days with the car I never once didn’t have it unlock or start. That is a small sample window, but still way better than fords system.

I would be okay with a physical key card only as a backup to the backup passcodes. The beauty of the codes is that you don't have to carry anything but your phone. When I drive our Tesla I have to make sure I am using a wallet phone case to carry the card.

Ford, please just leave PAAK alone. There's been significant improvement. Can't remember the last time I've had issues. I even switched to fingerprint locks on my house so I no longer have to carry keys.

And, I would refuse to pay any subscriptions, especially for something that's been free for years!

I don't get ford. They paid big bucks to bring the top Software guy over from Tesla, yet their software is still filled with bugs.

I thought they brought the guy over from Apple?

They need to improve on the response time. To be connected when approaching car. Would be the only feedback I give. Pixel 4a

You're probably right. Either way, "what the Hell has he been doing?"
I was going to apply for an open position in their EV software division awhile back but it was not remote, Michigan only, they need to offer remote options if they want access to more tech workers, we tend to congregate on the coasts!

@DevSecOps I see that you meant wallet card as yet another backup, which is good. Nothing wrong with options.

Apple Car Key has issues and limitations.
Ford PaaK has issues and limitations as well.

That said, in future versions of Ford cars, they could/should incorporate NFC chip(s) in the doors and dash specifically for access, start/stop, user profile auto select, etc.
I think Apple Car Key and Android Digital Car Key can already use NFC.
NFC:
  • Does not depend on spotty and inconsistent Bluetooth connections that are also tied to battery/power consumption
  • Can use secure tokens
  • Does not require internet access for basic authentication functions
    • Access/unlock door
    • Start/Stop car
    • Auto-Select user profiles stored in the car
  • Functionality can be enhanced when there isinternet access.
    • Connect access to location for features and functions
    • Allow guest user access (Guest user entered and maintained online)
    • Access changes to user profiles and settings changes made online
    • **This SHOULD be done** MyKey settings should be expanded and made available online and in FordPass. MyKey is basically a way to manage a kid, or guests experience, so it may as well be Ford's version of Life360.
      • Change Max Speed
      • Notify owner of MyKey user
        • Location (through a MyKey screen, not general location info)
        • Exceeding speed limit
        • Geofencing (notification, not disabling car)
      • Max Stereo Volume
      • Restrict phone use (when CarPlay/Android Auto is used)
OK. Off my soapbox. ;)
