Cruising at 45 mph on a rural 2 lane road, a deer races out right to left in front, I get on brakes quick but still smacks left front-center of hood and bumper.
  1. Bent 8” of hood front lip down at 45 degrees.
  2. Cracked left headlight when it appears it was pushed into fender.
  3. Cracked front bumper trim ring left of center.
  4. Opened/changed panel gaps between fenders, hood, left headlight and left door.
  5. Estimator said force transferred center leftside.
  6. Estimator said it’s possible there could be internal damage but car didn’t indicate any systems affected, front shutters operate correctly. He also commented that aluminum requires a different approach than steel, including tools, adhesives.
  7. Replacement parts include trim, hood, left headlight, possibly bumper cover or other internal parts (windshield washer reservoir as an example, it was empty so could be cracked).
A casual glance from 10 feet away and the car looks basically untouched. But hitting ~125 pounds at 45 mph is the same as hitting nearly two sacks of concrete.

Had a similar deer hit 5 years ago with an Edge Sport and that damage was $2,500. This at 3X was a bit surprising.. but those parts mentioned are nearly 50% of cost.

Not sure if you're needing to vent or looking for advice but i drive up in the moutnains often and i have started just honking my horn the second i see a deer. I'm done playing the, i'm gonna slow down and not kill you but in return please dont jump out and hit my car for no reason, game.

I just honk and scare the daylights out of them and make them run off.

I have a buddy from Canada. Apparently they have these air whistles installed in the front bumper that will make a high pitch sound to scare the animals away.

Not posting pics.
I hit a deer or a deer hit me and I was doing about 35 in an x3, 12k later car was like new, kind of, that was after my son backed into a tree for 3500 of damage and that was after I was hit on a highway while standing still in traffic, that was about 10k. Thankfully never t boned. My neck couldn’t handle that.

in all that an airbag never deployed but at least most of the car was new. Just got rid of it after 108k miles.

Your buddy didn't do research before buying... If they worked, everyone would buy them...

I'm sure you can easily find more sources.

Maybe I have lucky but my daily commute puts me by a bunch of deer on the side of road and I’ve noticed that when they here the whine of my car coming they look up and move off road before i get there. Wondering if it’s just a case of them startled

I‘d be on the horn all the time. Then there’s elk.
