Also, anybody serious about doing any gravel roads with this baby better PPF the whole car. Twice.
Or vinyl coat, since even PPF would be torn up in a year.

Maybe plan on a new wrap yearly?

Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally: The First Mustang Made to Live on Tarmac and Play in the Dirt

SHOT_15_CM_6039-3_RT2.jpeg

DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 7, 2023 – The world is about to witness the power and agility of EVs in a new way with the Ford Mustang Mach-E® Rally. It joins the Mustang Mach-E family and pushes electric vehicles in a different direction, the first-ever rally-inspired EV from Ford takes Mustang freedom and fun onto dirt roads.

"Just a year ago, this was merely an idea, and what you see today is a testament to the passion and intense creativity of our Model e team," said Donna Dickson, chief engineer, Mustang Mach-E. "We have always explored new areas of performance, and the combination of a rally-tuned suspension, dual motor electric powertrain, and wicked styling makes the Mustang Mach-E Rally a different kind of performance vehicle that will excite customers chasing their next adventure.”

SHOT_8_M2_9918-1_RT1.jpg

Mustang Mach-E Rally is electric vehicle technology applied to an entirely untapped white space, expanding the Mustang Mach-E family. This machine boasts a tuned version of the Mustang Mach-E GT powertrain, with a two-motor layout targeting at least 650 lb.-ft. of torque and 480 horsepower*.

The vehicle rides on a unique suspension that has been raised 20 millimeters over Mustang Mach-E GT and is equipped with specially tuned springs, MagneRide shocks, and 385-millimeter front brake rotors with red-painted Brembo®-branded calipers.

Mustang Mach-E Rally includes a lithium-ion battery with a 91 kWh usable capacity and is targeting an EPA-estimated range of 250 miles**. The Mustang Mach-E Rally is estimated to charge from 10 to 80% in approximately 36 and a half minutes on a DC Fast Charger.***

Where the rubber meets the dirt road, Mustang Mach-E Rally sports durable, gloss white 19-inch rally-style alloy wheels inspired by the long history of Ford rally vehicles and wearing 235/55 R19 Michelin CrossClimate2 tires that provide more sidewall and loose surface grip compared to GT. With all the gravel customers will kick up, the underside gets protective shielding for the front and rear motors, protective film on the door cladding and fender arches to help reduce paint chips, and available dealer-installed styled mud flaps to reduce debris spray. There’s also a recovery point built into the front end and included hook should off-highway adventures ever get a little too spicy.

SHOT_03_MONGOOSE_REVEAL_STATIC_PROFILE.jpg

Mustang Mach-E Rally has the first-ever RallySport Drive Mode from Ford, which is designed for off-road driving and allows for added yaw for bigger slides, a linear throttle response for better control, and more aggressive damping for better handling in loose corners. As a bonus, drivers will appreciate how this drive mode, combined with the new tires, allows the Mustang Mach-E Rally to perform in snow and other slick on-road conditions.

It also comes equipped with Ford technology customers have come to expect, including available Ford BlueCruise hands-free highway driving technology, which will be included with a 90-day trial or can be activated at any point during the vehicle ownership journey.† The latest generation of software, BlueCruise 1.3, builds on BlueCruise 1.0 and 1.2 by further enhancing the hands-free-driving experience. Customers will experience a more continuously engaged driving experience with Lane Change Assist and In-Lane Repositioning, providing improved performance including around curves and in narrow lanes.††

To test the Mustang Mach-E, Ford developed an all-new rally course at its Michigan Proving Ground. The course was specially designed by rallycross veterans to simulate just what the vehicle might see out in the real world. Engineers and technicians then abused Mustang Mach-E Rally prototypes in 500-mile tests simulating rally-cross durability trials to make sure it lived up to their design intent.

The Mustang Mach-E Rally also looks the part by wearing a dramatic rear spoiler that takes inspiration from the Focus® RS, unique contrasting accents, including upper and lower body moldings, a unique front splitter, black painted steel roof, distinctive and purposeful front fascia that houses built-in rally-inspired fog lights. Every Mustang Mach-E Rally comes standard with two racing stripes that complement the bold color palette. It can be ordered in Grabber Blue, Shadow Black, Eruption Green, and eye-popping Grabber Yellow with available Star White or new Glacier Gray as extra cost options.

Inside there’s a combination of comfort, functionality, and style that ties in with the iconic white wheels. There are gloss white accents on the dash, the lower spokes of the steering wheel and contrasting stitching on the doors. Drivers will strap into distinctive Ford-designed performance seats that feature gloss white seatbacks, and “Mach-E Rally” debossed into the seating surface.

“Mustang Mach-E Rally puts Ford’s decades of passion for rally championships around the world right in the hands of our customers.’ said Jim Farley, chief executive officer. “It takes Mustang where it hasn’t been before – to gravel and dirt roads. Inspired by true driving enthusiasts, a driving experience like never before for the pure joy of driving.”

Mustang Mach-E Rally is the latest in a long line of innovative vehicles from Ford, following in the tire tracks of the F-150 Raptor®, F-150 Lightning®, Maverick®, E-Transit®, and Ranger Raptor® all of which gave customers something new in the market. With Mustang Mach E-Rally, Ford is offering a crossover for passionate drivers with an active lifestyle who want to bring their friends along on their adventures, all while doing it with zero tailpipe emissions.†††

Ford says new changes in the Rally will extend the time at WOT. Some of the software changes that enable this could be coming soon to the GT and GTPE.
Apologies, where do you see Ford mention WOT?

I want Rally mode on the GTPE if it would really give the Mach-E a true Car and Coffee mode.

Eruption green ooooo my.

But if it’s a GT then does it still have the same power/thermal limitation? Feel like a rally car with the prison bars is a bit of a letdown.
The 5 Second Rule needs to go away for the Rally to work. Presumably Ford did exactly that and is what Darren Palmer was talking about with Tom Moloughney.

The other interesting tidbit is the charging time improvement going from 45 minutes down to an oddly-specific 36.5 minutes.

Are both of these merely software changes or did Ford beef up the high voltage hardware?

Yeah, to really have fun on a rally track/course you would expect all the power you want, all the time.

It does “go away” in unbridle extend now.

But that isn’t the fix we want, reducing power all the time.

I would be shocked if rally mode is much different. “more linear throttle response” is just Ford code for “reduced power.”

Because that’s the same way they describe unbridle extend.

I just hope the power reduction isn’t as extreme.

That said, you aren’t getting traction with 650 lb ft on gravel. Reduced power may actually make sense on a rally track.

19 inch wheels with the same brakes as the GTPE? I was told I couldn't downsize for winter tires on my car, a 2022 GPTE. I'm wondering what changed?

Interestingly, I put crossclimate 2's on mine...

Love this rally version. Really like the yellow color, not to bright not to creamy. Wish they had put a big light bar on top though! I would 100% get this instead of a regular ME when I'm ready to upgrade in a year or two.

No idea who Tom is, but if Darren said it, you can take it to the bank - “Soon” ???

Not sure why it’s called the “Rally Edition”? With its suspension components, it should be called the “Philadelphia City Streets Edition” ???

Pretty cool, but I see nothing mentioned about an upgraded cooling solution, so is this thing going to suffer from the same heat management issues that lead to the 5 second power limit before throttling down in todays vehicles? Even if they were to be a bit more generous with that limit from a software perspective, it changes nothing about the underlying limitations of the hardware currently in place, unless those components are physically upgraded and redesigned to provide better thermal management.

I would also be very concerned about HVBJB failures, and would hope that they are actually using a new part that is sized appropriately for the amount of current that the vehicle is capable of demanding, particularly over prolonged periods of time. If the average Joe's are killing their HVBJB when using the MMME as a family hauler taking kids to school, and are not even driving it hard, then what happens when someone actually opens it up on a dirt road for extended periods of time as is intended by a "rally" inspired design? So I would definitely be waiting for more data on this front.

Also, why in the heck did it take a "rally" design to get Ford to add a front tow hook tow point, in a standard location that was already there, and obviously deleted in all other North American vehicles? Every car ever made essentially has this emergency feature, so why delete it from the past couple model years, and then randomly reintroduce it as a "rally inspired feature"?? ?

All in all I like what Ford is doing, and hate to sound like a Debi downer, but as someone who has spent $83 CAD on my MME premium 4x that has very obvious (hardware design flaws that have not yet been addressed), I can't help but look through the snazzy paint job and racing stripes to think practically and critically about what's actually going on under the hood.
