Good summary.

So if you want your updates, drive the car. It doesn’t check while parked.
6.1.0 just downloaded and installed while I was parked in my garage setting up PaaK on my new phone. So maybe the more accurate statement is that the car needs to be on in ordered for it to update...?

More likely is that the 6.1.0 package downloaded during your previous drive cycle. After downloading it was verified and staged into an unused storage partition, and then verified again.

Then you parked.

Then you went to your garage to set up PaaK and you turned on the car. Sometime between previously turning off the car and now turning it back on, the gateway module completed the update by restarting from the previously unused storage partition... Thus, an "A/B" update, where "A" is the in-use storage and "B" is where the next update is staged and they flip flop.

Finally, shortly after you turned the car on to setup PaaK, the 6.1.0 update notification was displayed to you in vehicle, and made available at ford.com and in FordPass.

Yes, but it might have to be on up to 30 minutes to complete downloading files. Install status screen won't always update if the vehicle wasn't driven either. So it's best if people can just go for a drive, but in a pinch you can leave the car on for 30 minutes and manually check for updates. I can't promise update in park works on all 2021s however.

But I am 100% sure the car won't check for new updates when it's turned off. It will only install a pre-downloaded update at a scheduled time but won't check for new updates while off.

So I checked, his car downloaded the updates from 4:22 to 4:26 PM today and then installed immediately afterwards. 4:22 PM was probably shortly after he turned it on. My car took closer to 30 minutes to do the same thing probably because of slower cell service. It can vary a lot.

Having the car on for 30 minutes also helps charge up the 12V battery right before the update applies. It's better to have the key in the vehicle during this time because the charging system voltage is higher with the key present inside.

6.1 is “Not complete.” It’s been that way since Thursday as well. There’s been no Ford Connected Services in the car for most of that time as well. That came back in the last part of my drive home today.

5.1.1 just started rolling out to everyone this week. You are right on schedule.

The car can only check for updates that have been made available to it, and it checks automatically every time you turn it on. Going to the update screen is just redundant. Ford pushes updates gradually over time to different model years and trims. If an update hasn’t been made available for your VIN yet then no amount of checking is going to make it update.

The update schedule only pertains to when inhibit updates (ones that require the car to be inoperable) will be installed automatically. Setting this time doesn’t do anything for making updates download. The car checks automatically every time you turn it on.
And this lack of transparency is why most owners don't know if their car is up to date or not. As someone who has run programs in Silicon Valley for decades I can't really imagine a worse way to build customer confidence.

Honestly Ford SW management sucks.

I suspect the download was so fast because I have gigabit fiber service to my house and a Wi-Fi access point in my garage.

I'm basically not driving the car right now as I recover from hand surgery. We did take it out a week ago, but I think that's the last time it was driven... But I'm happy that I can still get the BC 1.3 updates in the interim.

If this replaces 5.1.1 why are they still rolling that out? Cause I just got that one today.

Has anyone with EAP 21 Job 2 received this update?
2021 job 2 in EAP and nope. And I typically get updates the first day they show up on the forum

Okay, I'm very intrigued by the comment that having the key in the vehicle improves charging system voltage. If the vehicle is "running", I don't understand why having the key in or out of the vehicle makes a difference.

Will you please explain? Thanks!

Would it be possible for EV manufacturers to register your car/VIN number so instructions could be explained to you on your desktop/laptop? This could end those cryptic messages that require pages of reading. They could give you instructions on how to and options on when to update. They could also message you as to any problems. I would much prefer to do this in the comfort of my home, no stress while driving, futilely trying to start my car (or stop it). I could even printout a page of instructions, take them out to my car and do as ordered. Chat would work very well if this all didn't work on the first try or two.

ps Chat AI could offer the first correction, but then switch to actual person. Most of the time I use chat I get the answers I need quickly, wasting neither my time, nor that of the technician.
