You may be throwing the baby out with the bath water.

If you’re willing to switch brands over a bad service experience, you definitely won’t be happy with Chrysler. And where do you even get a Rivian serviced?

The short answer for Rivian is……. Not a lot of places-

https://rivian.com/support/article/where-are-rivian-service-centers-located

For me in Florida, there are only two to choose from. Most states only have one or ZERO! ?
I also own a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I picked up the day before the MachE and it’s never been in for a problem. It’s the second Grand Cherokee I owned in a row.

As far as Rivian, you may have a point. I will look into where to service it. But logic is that companies like Tesla and Rivian’s service departments aren’t there for the upsell. I know a person who worked in that field for a long time and he told me the first thing they are told to do is upsell you. They get a percentage of the upsell.

How fast has anyone gone through brakes? I had some grinding a couple of weeks ago and the dealership I bought the car from said the brakes are ok. 2 weeks later it went to full on squeaking and weird sounds. I thought there was damage to the car somewhere so I took it to a dealership closer to my home and he said the brakes need to be replaced and the rotors cut. I thought EV’s don’t wear brakes as fast. I have ICE cars that had brakes last longer. Has anyone had the same issue?
I was having some loud grinding sounds whenever I braked that was worse on any type of incline or decline. Took car to dealer and of course they find nothing wrong. Through research and posting on this forum I found my answer. Embarrassed to say I didn’t understand how regenerative brakes work and the dealer never explained. I have since switched to 1 pedal drive mode because unbeknownst to me I had been using the actual brakes this whole time and sure they had brake dust which contributed to the noise. I do still get some noise occasionally when on a steep incline or decline, but overall much better performance and less noise now that I have been educated on how to drive this car. You can also put car into Auto hold mode but the brake pedal must be used to activate this feature. I hope this info helps someone. Many posters here use such technical terms and sometimes it’s hard to understand. If I have posted anything incorrect please feel free to “kindly” correct me.

I don’t think you would have the same problem with Rivian service, but living anywhere near a service center is its own problem.

I wish the “up sell” was a problem you could run away from, but it exists at every major manufacturer unfortunately. The example I gave above was at Honda. Tesla and Rivian are electric only so definitely you wouldn’t expect that there. But it’s trading one problem for another.

The good thing about the “upsell” issue is you can easily combat it by saying “no” to anything they want to do outside of warranty work. It’s half the price at a local mechanic anyways compared to the dealer.

So what I recommend- buy the car you want, but only use dealer service centers for warranty work.

1-pedal shouldn't make any difference at all unless you are constantly mashing the brake pedal.

FWIW, I have 30.5k miles and 2.5 years on mine, use engage and almost never in 1-pedal mode, my pads are fine.
Saying use of one-pedal won’t make a difference in brake wear is false. I use one-pedal and I estimate that it reduces brake use by 2/3rds to 3/4s. So saying it doesn’t reduce brake wear is impossible - basic physics.

Actually, I estimate that using 2 pedal driving reduces brake use by 2/3rds to 3/4s vs. 1pd driving.

And using and anchor and rope reduces braking by 100%

There may be a formula somewhere but how effective 1p vs 2p depends entirely on driving style. All things being equal 1p and gentle driving should be the best at not using the friction brakes. Simply because it requires less skill you coast to a stop the system does everything for you. But someone could become very good and gentle with 2pd and be just as effective

agree with the other comments... i'd verify before spending the $$$.

a few years ago, for my previous car, my volvo dealer wanted new rotors/pads all around for like $2000. took it to my trusted local tire/brake place and they said i just needed the pads sanded down and had another 15-20k miles and to just come back then.

good chance it was a typical upsell and even more ridiculous one given EVs, especially if using 1 pedal driving, hardly use the pads

I can coast to a stop in 2pd mode... by just letting off of the accelerator. Zero skill required.

Both 1pd and 2pd use the exact same blended braking system. Imagine I put in a green button on the left, and and red button on the right. Both tie into the same blended braking system. Would you still argue over whether the green button or the red button used less friction brakes?

Just an update for everyone who replied and helped out. After pointing out the TSB’s on the vehicle and stating that nobody responded to me with needing brakes as early as I did the service department called me back and said it was covered.

Thank you all for your help

And that's true you can coast to a stop with 2pd. But if you think it's going to work in normal driving situations you will rear end someone.

Why does your 'coast to a stop' work fine, but my coast to a stop rear ends someone?
