Hey folks, worst design ever. Door would not open so I pried it open and the pin broke the area around where it twists into place on the door. The pin survived ?Might try Velcro but I suspect I need a new door. Ughh. Door does seem to stay closed but curious if a good bump would cause the door to open.

I left my charging port door open outside to charge. The door pin lock that holds it locked seemed frozen. Tried unfreezing it and tried to close the door, but the holder just fell inside. Wondering how do I get to it. Bottom seems closed, so I am presuming I need to get to it from the top somehow. See attached picture for clarity.

I am in the same situation, my charging door pin is intact but the other part broke and fell inside. Were you able to fix it yourself? And do you guys know if you ordering that BMW part, is it coming in complete set? Like the door pin and the other end where the pin goes?

Hi Michael,

I agree 100% with you!

Mine nevers opens first time (typically about three pushes) and it's taken me ages to develop a "knack" which as you say requires exactly the correct pressure at the correct point. It used to take at least half a dozen goes!

I had a Mitsubishi PHEV prior to my MME and this never failed to open or close first time.

Happy New Year to you,
David
FYI - I've changed my approach to this. I found that instead of pushing, if you lightly "punch" the door with the soft part of your closed fist when opening or closing the door it works first time every time. I didn't want to damage the door and never had to apply that much force on prior fuel doors but this seems to work.

Warranty will definitely cover this. Take it in and have them fix it. Some double sided tape "Velcro" inside might hold it closed in a more pleasing manner than tape, until your part arrives at the dealer.
Yup. This happened to me over the past weekend. My Mach-E was going in coincidentally today for its 10k mile tire rotation and annual inspection, so I asked them to look at the issue. I'm told they've ordered the part, and the fix will be covered under warranty once the part arrives. Meanwhile, I'm going for the double-sided Velcro plastic fasteners for the interim. {Jonathan}

I have the same problem, my charging port door open in a car wash and broke my door pin. But after couple days of research I found the same part in another brand and work perfect...

Update: part came in, dealership replaced it free of charge (no pun intended), and delivered my car to my home this a.m. (It also needed a tire repair after I got a slow puncture the other day; also covered free of charge under my tire/wheel warranty or general warranty, I'm not sure.) {Jonathan}

Thanks MTORRES7.
So it looks like your pin broke off at the base ... just like mine. I have ordered the part and am excited to install it. However, I have a question ... how did you get the boken base out. I'm guessing turned to the left but how were you able to turn it?

You were just closing it? Does not sound like you were abusing it just normal use and was defective so get them to fix it. It is a bit flimsy; I do not think they will argue that. They can explain the correct use if they need to.

Thanks for the insight that it can fall apart. I need to baby it a bit for sure.

A cover? Maybe a length of strip magnet folded into and holding a draped piece of plastic over everything? A DIY of this here. A cleaner charging port needs to be figured out here also so I can stop the hair dryer.
That magnetic cover wouldn't stick on the your Mach e since its front fender is made of aluminum.

Dec. 2021 that is going back. Ended up with this and it works for me. Keeps what need to be free of ice and snow.

The latch is still good, had the hairdryer out once this year. Today it is above 0C (weird) so it should take care of itself. Works fine so far but still say a bit flimsy and you need to be gentle with it.

I am having the same issue. But I need the female part to the door lock not the pin.

has anyone tried #3 in the BMW parts diagram?

I am out of warranty and the ford dealer will not fix it unless of course I pay and I am being quoted around $800-$900 to fix it.

that part #3 is like $50

has anyone used that?

thanks

I had the same thing happen on my select. Rain followed by rapid cold freezing and I had left the port open because I was charging overnight. I shut the door not knowing there was a chunk of ice in the receiver and it popped into the car, never to be seen again.

Dealer took care of me - it was a warranty service but they had to order the whole surround and replace it.

I had something similar happen yesterday, taped it and drove straight to the dealer. The knew exactly what it was and booked me in. Thankfully it unfroze a little and will hold itself closed now, but the door is not sitting flush against the body like it used to.

For mine, the female pin is still there and moves freely but whatever is used to catch the male pin and hold it closed stopped working after it was charging outside in -5C temps all day. It was parked in a condo underground overnight so there shouldn't have been any water ingress to freeze either.
