Government doesn't need more taxes, they just keep printing money. That's the reason we are 34 trillion in debt and our $ is becoming worthless. Since the 70's the dollar has lost 97% of it's value. It's now fiat money. Not backed by anything. Good read The Creature from Jekyll Island Update 5th Edition https://a.co/d/bUiXYWo

Small potatoes? How do you see paying for road repairs?
I pay $159 to the city and $251 to the state to drive 6,000 miles a year. Tapped out. They can all fuck off now.

Roads and their maintenance are substantially underfunded throughout the US. One way to figure this is look at how much roads and bridges; new or major rebuilding; contracts are, divvy that amongst the people living in the area.

Have you been to Texas lately. I lived there for 30 years before coming to Washington. The roads there are pristine. Unlike the ones here that are full of pot holes. There I was paying less than $100 for registration and gas is rock bottom. Money management is the key.

Missouri requires you to buy a Special Fuel decal for electric vehicles and plug in hybrids with a 2018 model year or later. The fee for plug in hybrids is 1/2 the fee for fully electric cars.

It started in 2022 at $90 for a fully electric car which you had to pay by Jan. 31, 2023. It increases $15/year for five years. This year I paid $105 for 2023, and next year by Jan.31, 2025 I'll pay $120 for 2024. I’ll be paying $150/year as of 2027, at which point a new bill will probably increase it again.

This is in addition to the usual registration fees.

Also applies to propane and natural gas vehicles.

Generally, the farther south you go, the less deterioration due to winter weather and salt. That helps, too.

Have you been to Seattle lately? The weather here is perfect. A week of freezing and a week of 90s. Compare to Dallas. A month of freezing and 3 month of 100s.

We are paying a shit load more here than I did there. That’s not enough to fix the “extra” pit holes?

We also have less than half the roads down there. There, every road is 6 lanes, here only 2 lanes.

Are we paying our Fair Share of highway taxes? Since those taxes are mostly a per gallon assessment, in most cases we are not and it isn't helping anyone. Some States are charging a fee when you register your BEV but that isn't fair either. There needs to be a tax based on miles driven and the weight of the vehicle. Here in upstate NY the roads took a beating this winter and road repairs are very expensive. There needs to be an equitable solution.
First, many jurisdictions are not bothering to charge road taxes against EVs in part because… they want to encourage EV use. And they’re totally entitled to make that call. It’s better than some of the supplemental registration charge some jurisdictions are now charging EV drivers. In some cases these charges even exceed what those drivers would have likely paid in road taxes.

Maybe it’s time to look at that funding and the whole business model. In most places gas taxes haven’t gone directly to roads in years, just to general revenue. Maybe we need to see that happen again. And maybe instead of charging EV drivers when they renew tags, maybe charge ALL drivers.

Here’s an idea: give drivers a choice. If you don’t want the government getting mileage reports, charge a relatively large flat fee. If you don’t want to pay that you get the choice to report mileage and be assessed on that. And do it for ALL vehicles, not just EVs and remove the gas taxes completely.

We pay an additional fee of $221 for an EV when registering. Indiana is a drive through state, so they get a lot of revenue from people that don't live in the state when they buy fuel in the state. They will probably add new taxes on DCFC charging to collect money from the outsiders. So eventually we will pay a big EV fee plus road taxes at the DCFC stations.

Most of the road deterioration is from freezing and thawing and plowing. Maybe Texas has less of that then WA

Yes, here in NY the roads do take a beating compared with Georgia. I'm sure that is what you meant when you point out that is where I am from..

Government i.e. (collectively you and me in State/Federal/local) needs resources to do many of the daily activities that we enjoy.

Examples:
Schools
Roads
Defense
Just to name a few.

Ironically, if the Government collected more money they would not need to print more money.

Now granted, if one stopped spending money one wouldn't need either avenue but if we were to continue with the services that are already in place (defense, schools etc.) are you in effect in favor of collecting more taxes and not printing more?

Just curious.

Tax credits for driving EV..

vs

Charging more taxes for driving EV…

They need to pick a lane!!

Plus we already pay EXTRA taxes because we use extra electricity:

“
Taxes on Your Florida Electricity Bill
Your electricity bill includes a gross receipts tax that may include up to four other different taxes, paid to state or local governments. You may pay a franchise fee, utility/municipal tax, Florida sales tax, and discretionary sales surtax, too. These taxes vary by area and are not controlled by your utility company. The company collects these taxes and distributes them to the proper government entities.
• Gross Receipts Tax: paid to the State of Florida; approximately 2.56% of your bill.
• Franchise Fee: paid to municipalities and/or counties in exchange for the government not creating an electric utility of its own that would compete with your utility company.
• Utility/Municipal Tax: paid to municipality or county; based on your electricity usage.
• Florida Sales Tax: paid to the State of Florida; 7% of the amount of electricity you purchase.
• Discretionary Sales Surtax: paid to your county.”
