The wireless charging pad seems to eventually cause my phone to overheat and stop charging - this is a pretty common problem. But I was fairly certain that plugging the phone in would cause it to no longer use the wireless charging, and yet… it seems to overheat even when plugged in, forcing me to move the phone to the other pad.

Is this what other folks have observed?

part of what is causing the overheat is the wireless projection the car uses to project android auto or carplay. if you turn the wireless version off it will not be hot at all in fact...

It still seems to work and charge fine as long as I don’t put it on the charging pad while it’s plugged in?

Hi Dave! I can look into your Mach-E's charging concern on my end. To get started, could you please send a private message over with the name/location of your local Ford dealer and your Mach-E's VIN?

Charging Pad is always on, even if you are plugged in. Just move your phone to the right side of the pad, that is NOT connected to charging.

This. Your phone is likely pulling power from both the pad and cord. Move it off the pad.

OP didn't say iPhone or Android, but if it's iPhone then it will prioritize charging by cord first, not both.
android does too, it's why i didn't respond to OP. i don't understand why they are experiencing what they say they are, it cannot use wireless charging when plugged in.

i continue to think it is the projection and maybe the OP is mistaken, but have no idea beyond that.

With my iPhone 12 pro + Apple magsafe case, everything is better using carplay via USB-C, wireless carplay disabled. The phone stays cooler and there are no random disconnections when passing through areas with RF interference. This has been true even in rental cars from different makers, so I don't think it's purely a Ford issue. I've been doing this almost three years and don't even notice myself plugging in each time.

As a bonus, I can connect my phone to WiFi when parked and charging without manually disconnecting from carplay. This can be handy when one has to use an app to initiate a charge in a place with poor cellular service.

The phone I’m experiencing this with is an iPhone 11. I keep hearing that MagSafe is the better option but my iPhone doesn’t support it, AFAIK.

I've been using wireless CarPlay (usually with my phone in pocket) and it only gets mildly warm, nothing too alarming. But if I use the charging pad it gets extremely hot. It is definitely not normal and I won't use it. I have MagSafe chargers in the house and it doesn't get nearly as warm. Don't know if it's defective or bad design. I have a TWRAPS MagSafe charging pad on order to replace it.

Android Auto user here, and it looks like it only picks one charging source - however, 6-8 months ago, Google updated Android Auto and I started to get more "Phone is getting too hot" messages when the only thing that changed was Android Auto. Most of the time, the phone is cool to the touch, so I suspect Google's tolerances are too wide.

Complete conjecture on my part.

I've gotten the same messages at times. I have proven that with Android Auto off, and only Bluetooth on, it charges at a pretty high speed wirelessly for a good amount of time before it heats up. I've gotten 30-40 minutes and a good 25-30% on a Pixel 8 Pro. If I have wireless Android Auto on, I can only get 10 minutes max.

If you're an Android user, you can gauge the charge speed and optimal placement well with an app called Ampere.

I tried the TWRAPS with Pixel 8 Pro (with Google certified MagSafe case) and I'm not getting the speeds I would expect. The company has been great, and I think there are some bugs with my phone or AA. I am looking forward to when Google releases the Pixel 9 series which comes with Qi2 and MagSafe. I get the impression the current implementations are a bit of a hack.

I see Ford responded. I wrote them about this too and they told me to bring it in. I haven't gotten around to it. Let me know if you do, and what happens.

I'm a new 2023 Job 2. What model are you?
