Maybe it’s just me. But I think when people talk about affordable cars they are thinking a starting MSRP 10-15k+ cheaper than 40k.
True only reason I would buy a ICE eco-boost Mustang is because it’s around 40 and I’d probably buy it used and get it less than that. The coyote is just getting out of control and I have had many 5.0’s.

I wouldn’t say Tesla is extremely affordable. There cheapest model stripped down to RWD small battery is still about 40k that I saw on their website.
The cheapest models are the long range RWD Model 3 and Y that are mid $30k with the federal tax credit, even lower with potential state incentives. AWD isn’t much more. It’s right in line with a Toyota Camry and barely more than the 2025 Maverick. I highly doubt that their new EV platform will be undercutting the cost of the ICE Maverick on any vehicle they plan to sell profitably, so it will very likely be in line with Tesla’s current prices.

Tax credits are from the government. Not what the manufacturers actual price is. Tesla also figures in price of the car with gas savings lol. Like really? Turn off (click the checkbox) all those B.S. prices to get the price of wants they are selling for. Not the corporate welfare price they are using as if it’s their money/discount.

You don’t think Ford is going to try to use the tax credit to help the price of their EVs either?? Then why are they going through the trouble of moving Mach-E battery production to Michigan to get it back? I agree that it’s corporate welfare but it’s also a real and significant factor in the purchase price of an EV for a buyer. I was ignoring the gas savings stuff Tesla toggles on.

Except that the MSRP and the tax credits are not independent. Tax credits disappear, demand goes down, manufacturer's reduce their pricing.

Anyway, this debate is kinda lame. In my state (MA) someone with modest income can purchase a Model 3 for $31k after incentives. That's pretty freekin' affordable when the average new car transaction in the US is $48k. I could care less if those incentives are coming from the government versus the manufacturer.

Average vehicle cost…not car.

But also a reason average age of vehicles keeps hitting new record highs….40k is not affordable for a large portion of people.

The generally best selling car in US, Toyota Camry, starts at $28.5 (of which under dealership model you usually don’t pay MSRP anyway). And that is before you get into most people don’t buy new anyway.

Sure, but for anyone considering an EV, the comparison between a Model 3 and a base model Camry is laughable while the net cost is within 10%. I'd consider the Model 3 both vert affordable and very good value.

Wouldn't the used car market be even more advantageous for EV's? It seems like half the threads I read on Reddit (and many here) are complaining about the decimated market value of our cars. You can buy really good used EV's under $30k.

Heck people apparently want a 3rd row SUV.
We don't want a 3rd row SUV. We want a vehicle that holds 6 people. Since all the vehicles have eliminated 3 across front seating, that means we need a 3rd row SUV.

When our son and his family visit, we have to take 2 vehicles everywhere because we can only fit 5.

Beat Tesla to the punch selling affordable EVs?
You have to admit Ford is sounding a lot like Tesla with their announcements these days:

"Incredible breakthroughs coming! Lower costs, lower prices! Big profits! Better range! Groundbreaking performance! We plan to deliver all this in three* years! Just you wait, it's gonna be awesome!"

* Or maybe five or six years, who really knows? But it's totally gonna be awesome, someday!

Great. Like we need more boxy non-aerodynamic EVs when the masses really need are sensible commuter and family friendly vehicles at an attainable price. Do Americans really go to Home Depot or hunt deers everyday?

Perhaps Ford realises that they really do not have a chance in hell to compete with foreign brands when it comes to non-truck EVs? Therefore sticking to the last bastion of vehicle segment?
I had so much hope for Ford or GM to step up to the EV plate to take on Tesla years ago. I felt I have bet on the wrong horses.
Americans don't go to home depot or hunt deer everyday, but they do buy pickup trucks in massive numbers... they want them. And importantly, the imports are not competitive in that space nor are they going to be.... partly because the Koreans and the Europeans don't buy them so they are not world market vehicles.

An electric truck is going to be a North American product (for now). The likely EV competitors are looking for global products. GM and Ford have mostly retreated to America. A small electric truck is likely to be a space where Ford can be profitable.

Man, solid state batteries cannot get here soon enough. All of this arguing about range, cost, etc will seem so quaint. A decade, maybe? Fingers crossed.

As for the MME, maybe we get a refresh in 25 or 26 but it's hard to see another generation happening based on what Ford has announced.
Magic batteries are not coming anytime soon... sorry.

3 across front seating
I mean - I think probably most people want a vehicle where the 6th passenger as an at least close to equal probability of survival as everyone else in the car.

The Kia EV9 would fit the bill, and the exterior looks sexy as hell. Plus the 800v faster charging. I’ve never sat in a Kia EV, though, so unsure what interior quality would be like.
