With the original A2Z, they recommended putting the Tesla plug into the adapter first, then plugging into the car. With the new Pro, they recommend plugging the adapter into the car first, then plugging in the Tesla plug into the adapter.

The Ford adapter process is like the former, and the Lectron is like the later. Not sure about the Ford adapter, but I know the Lectron and A2Z Pro work either way. According to Lectron, the later process is more reliable...probably why A2Z changed their procedure recommendation.

Plug and Charge won't work unless you car got the update from Ford.
Anyway to tell if you have this update to know if I can just buy the A2Z? Still waiting on Ford provided one but sure it’ll be forever.

The update isn’t required to charge at Tesla, just for plug and charge. You can always activate via the Tesla app.

As stated, the update enables Plug and Charge. You can activate via FordPass, or the Tesla app.

A2Z's instructions for the Typhoon Pro explicitly instructs to plug the adapter into the car first, then connect the Supercharger lead to the adapter. This is in contrast to the one from Ford, where they advise to attach to the lead, then plug in to the car.
It’s a passive adapter…order you plug it in isn’t going to change anything.
The order of plugging in doesn’t matter for the Typhoon adapters, but it DOES matter for the Ford adapter due to differences in the physical interlock. The Ford adapter must be plugged into the cable before the car (and vice versa when removed) or you wont physically be able to do it. Conversely, the Typhoon adapters allow any order of plugging in.

So for those reading, the order you must do things does vary depending on which adapter you have. For safety, the electronic negotiation process does not start until both interlocks are fully latched. If you are using Plug & Charge you have unlimited time to plug in. If you are using charger activation through an app, you have about a minute.

I believe the recommendation changed for Typhoon Pro because it's now a larger and heavier adapter. You will be less likely to fumble and drop the adapter if you plug it into the car first, hence the recommendation.

The old Typhoon adapter did have a weakness in which the Tesla plug could be removed from the adapter while it was locked to the vehicle. The Ford adapter and the new Typhoon Pro adapter should prevent this from being possible on vehicles that fully lock the charge port while unattended (other brands besides Ford).

I ordered the original Typhoon the day I picked up my Mach E, June 23rd and swapped my order to the Pro on July 8. It finally arrived Aug 20th. Not a great start, but everyone raves about how good quality the original Typhoon is so I was willing to hang in there and give it a go.

It arrived while I was on vacation, so I tired it the morning after we got back home and all I can say is it worked flawlessly!

First time using a Tesla Supercharger with the Mach E so was a little apprehensive, especially with the closest one to me always being packed. I ended up having to park halfway into the next stall rather than taking up the full next stall over. Thankfully it was fairly quiet at the location at 7:30am so I didn’t get any glares from taking up two stall.

I was unsure of how the “Plug & Charge” would work, but I had no need to worry. Within 10-15 seconds of plugging the adapter into the car, then the cable into the adapter, it started charging. No interactions needed on my part, just like charging a Tesla.

The build quality seems to be pretty robust, the thing is heavy! The latch is fairly simple to use, it’s essentially a two stage button, push down lightly to release the CCS port, then push down harder to release the NACS cable. Super simple.

Overall, very pleased with it and looking forward to some cheap charging. (Tesla is $0.26/kWh, next cheapest is BC Hydro at $0.35/kWh - all in CAD). I did the math and with the rates in Metro Vancouver, I would have to use approx. 1600km/1000mi of Supercharger charging per month to break even with the subscription ($0.05/kWh discount). So I will probably only sign up for that when going on a road trip where I can take full advantage of the discount.

Your price of $.26/kWh is exceptional. In Bancroft Ontario, the cost per kWh is $.90, I am not kidding. So you are less than 1/3 the cost. Don't tell them you are getting a steal. The A2Z does work amazingly well with nothing to do be watch the charge % go up.

Yeah, Metro Vancouver is this little island of cheap Tesla Superchargers. As soon as you leave the Metro Vancouver regional district, prices start to go up. Even in Abbotsford it’s $0.30/kWh, Hope it’s $0.62/kWh, and Calgary is closer to your pricing.

I think it might have something to do with the density of Teslas in Metro Vancouver compared to other regions. We have 10 supercharger locations with two more ready to come online any day, where Calgary has 2 total. It feels like every third car on the road here is a Tesla.

I received my Typhoon Pro just on time for my 1000 mile trip from Chicago to Hilton Head. Thank you A2Z for getting it to me on time! I charged 6 times on the trip and choose Tesla Superchargers for each charge. On only one insurance did I get the red lights on the charge t where I had to change chargers. I activated on the Tesla app to save money and it worked flawlessly. Charge rates started just above 150 kW and reminded higher than what I typically have seen at EA. In one instance there's were EV go chargers close by at $.53 when Tesla (with membership) was $.32. always was able to park to accommodate cable length. I'm one location adjacent chargers were facing opposite directions with parking on both sides. This allowed me to park without blocking any other chargers. Picture attached. This trip was easy and completely stress free.

Other than the cheap local charging that is the other reason I wanted the Tesla adapter. On the long weekend road trips I’ve done with the Mach E all the CCS chargers were mostly full with only the insanely expensive ones free, where all the Supercharger locations were only ever half full. Plus the Superchargers are far more reliable than the hodgepodge network of CCS chargers.
