what charger do i need

I just moved into a rental and was told that they had an "EV charger". Well all they have is a fast charging outlet. (pic below) Luckily i still had the Ford charger in the storage space in the back. But it doesn't fit (pic also below). What kind of charger or adapter do i need to work with this outlet? Thanks.

That outlet is a 14-30 (30 A). Your charger has a 15-40 and is a 32A charger. You can find an adapter but you will blow the circuit breaker (hopefully that vs roasting the wires or outlet first).

What you need is a portable charger that can be run at 24A — the maximum you can safely operate on that circuit.

There are very few EVSEs that have a 14-30 plug at the end of their mains cable. The Tesla Mobile Connector has an optional 14-30 pigtail and de-rates to 24A. If you already have a Tesla Destination adapter, that’s a no-brainer. Even if you do not, an adapter is useful to have in your arsenal since a lot of hotels that have charging only have Tesla Destination chargers available. ??

Thanks! I was just going to come back and say that i figured out its a 14-30 outlet, and that my adapter needs a 14-50. I'm in this place for a year and don't feel like spending a lot. The landlord seems reasonable so he might be willing to change the outlet. I'm willing to pay a little for some sort of connector that allows these two pieces to work together. But i am ignorant about electrical matters and don't understand most of what people say re this matter, except that i don't want to overload the circuit. The adapters i see on amazon are around $20 but clearly from chinese companies and i don't want to damage things. Are there other options people have?

Do NOT use the Ford Mobile Charger on a 30A outlet. The FMC will not de-rate and try to draw 32A. This will become a safety issue. If the landlord’s electrician installed a 30A outlet, the wiring and breaker likely will not support more than that. I bought a Tesla Mobile myself because the duck club a co-worker belongs to has some 10-30 outlets, so I can safely charge at 24A. Well, also because the FMC has a reputation for being unreliable. ??

I just looked at the Chinese made EVSEs on Amazon and none of the ones that come with a 14-30 plug are any less than a Tesla Mobile plus the optional pigtail. Of course a Tesla Destination adapter adds to that cost too. I do believe that this is the best, most flexible mobile solution. ??

No. You need to use the s as Tesla charger. You can only use an adapter to use the 110v plug, not the 240v plug, in that outlet.

Realize the landlord would have to replace the circuit breaker with a 50A breaker, run new wires, and install a 14-50 outlet. You can’t put a 50A outlet on a 30A circuit.

Check out SplitVolt They have a 14-30 version. I got a 10-30 version SplitVolt to use on the Dryer outlet.

Cool idea. BUt Unless i'm missing something (entirely possible), doesn't that require a charging cord that would fit the 14-30 outlet on the splitter? Still doesn't seem to solve my problem.

Landlord is going to get the electrician out soon. There's not a cheap safe option for me to purchase and he needs a professional before spending a lot more.

You cannot use an adapter with that outlet. The Ford charger will trip the breaker. And no you can't swap the breaker with a bigger one.

You cannot just swap out the 30A outlet for a 50A one. The wires in the wall are too small, the whole wall would have to be torn open to replace the wires with bigger ones and the landlord won't do that.

You have to buy a 24A EVSE such as this: https://www.amazon.com/MUSTART-Portable-Charger-Electric-Charging/dp/B07L8XRRLN/ or the Tesla mobile charger with the 14-30 adapter.

Buying a 24A EVSE is the ONLY solution to use the wiring that's already installed. I'm sorry but you're just going to have to spend the money if you want to charge your car without burning the place down.
