Wow, that's a kick in the pants for MY2021 owners if they get stuck on 1.0 forever.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the software available via FDRS? If so, they could salvage some goodwill by offering to cover it for free through the dealer network. It would definitely cost Ford some money, but the cost would be at least partially offset by an increase in BC subscription renewals, and of course avoiding further damage to the brand.

From everything I've heard, the files have been available with direct install (FDRS) for a long time. Just the delivery challenge of OTA has ever stood in the way of a 2021, or for that matter, 2022-2023.

So it's really just a co$t/value equation for any owner. Or put another way, everyone says they want it. And that's probably true. But how much, is the real question.

Received this response from a Ford executive on LinkedIn:

"
There is no update on timeline for 2021 MME updates. Please make sure that automatic downloads and scheduling is set to “daily” to ensure you receive the update ASAP.

If you have other questions please contact the Customer Relationship Center at 1-800-392-3673.

Thanks

Ford changed their website in the past day and dropped 2021 from the matrix they had published. It had shown 22 and 23 as having the update, and 21 as available soon. Not sure why they changed it if 21 is still getting the update.
21’s can get BC.1.3 without the update being IPMA-24.204.8.27 which would make the page change valid.

Also not like it’s coming summer 24, so need a new announcement for 21’s anyway.

Trying to slip it past us (by changing the web site) and not telling us outright is an issue! Based on their earlier emails, announcements and advertising I feel they are obligated to update our 2021 cars one way or another. The problem is WHEN?

Funny, but 2021 owners could have have BC 1.whatever for almost a year now if they really wanted it. Tears are cheaper than a Mongoose, I guess.

If Ford gave up on 2021's, then I would love for someone to explain to me how my job 1 2021 truck has newer IPMA software available for it (and installed on it) than what 2024 vehicles come with? I won't hold my breathe for an explanation with any merit to it.

Oh look, Yet another communication blunder from Ford.

Truthfully, I’m fine with this so long as the price to renew BC drops accordingly. Bring back the $200/ year subscription for us 1.0 drivers. If Ford wants me to keep my car at the end of my options period, throw us a bone and just give it to us free of charge as an appreciation since they don’t plan to update our cars anymore. Its not looking good for my resale value as it is but just might make 21s ever so slightly more interesting in the resale market.
If they aren’t going to continue development for my car, I’d be fine with a subscription that reflects the cost of map updates only. For me, that’s gotta be somewhere around $100/year max.

First, not everyone has the technical chops/courage to do an update that could potentially brick their car. Second, it’s more than just a cable. For example, I’m exclusively Apple. I would have to buy a windows PC and an expensive FDRS license (yes, I know “cheap” ones are available), and a special power supply (not just a 12V Battery tender) to even attempt it. Why should I invest over $1,000 to likely brick my car?

I wonder what the take would be if they made it available to MY21 as a PAID dealer install?

It’s not that technical

The website this post is referring to is talking about ‘Software update IPMA-24.204.8.27 starting in summer 2024’.

BC 1.3 can go to 21’s and the update not be that version number.

So Ford is completely full of shit.

Looks at the F350 and Mach E job 1 in my garage.

I guess these are my last Fords. The way they’ve treated and handled Job 1 is embarrassing.

Everyone makes good EV’s these days. No need to buy from liars.

I totally agree that owners shouldn't have to bust out FDRS to make this update, but I do want to point out that:
1) FDRS licensing is $50 for 48 hours. That's plenty of time to perform the update.
2) The car is extremely difficult to brick. I've failed the IPMA flash more times than I can remember - even running my LVB down so low that the car actually turned off the coolant pumps. I've even driven the car with the IPMA module in a corrupt state, and all it said was essentially BlueCruise/lane keep assist unavailable in the IPC. I think Ford has made FDRS pretty idiot-proof because most dealer techs don't know their USB from their Ethernet.

Again, totally and utterly bullshit that we have to resort to FDRS for '21 vehicles at this time.
