Huh, think they will reimburse all of those of us who had to replace their 12V battery from all this? No real answer needed.

My 12v battery just died this weekend and it is at the Ford dealership for this exact issue. But they want to charge me $700+. My car's warranty ran out last month but isn't this a recall? If it is, should it be free?

Thank you

You definitely have a case for them to 'perform the recall' and make whatever repair necessary because your car experienced the issue the recall addresses.

$700 is far too high, if you have AAA perhaps they will tow it to another dealership for you without cost?

This is only a TSB, not a recall. If you are out of the 3 yr warranty period, then the repairs will not be covered.

It should cost about $200 for the dealer to replace your 12V battery (MSRP is $130 plus core charge and labor), I would discuss that with them or go elsewhere. You can also change it yourself if you're handy.

Good to see there is some consistency with how Ford deals with their own short comings. At least the government forced them to fix their faulty HVJB design. As far as eating 12V's that is on us. And if we require/want any software to fix the short coming is that also on us? Maybe that is the $700 total?

It’s not easy to find dealers replacing batteries at fair price. I just recently contacted had to contact multiple dealers in SF Bay Area and end up buying battery for installing myself

Dealers are dealers. It’s like how some charge $30 for a tire rotation and some charge $150 for the same thing. Unfortunately, the predatory ones rely on customers thinking that dealers have uniform pricing. ??

Seems like Ford is playing semantics to get out of battery replacements. Anyone experiencing this should contact the FTC and hold Ford accountable. This shifting the blame is unacceptible. The cars clearly have a defect, and based on my 2024 needing an update directly related to this, Ford still hasn't figured it out. This is at least consistent with all the bad car press Ford's getting for these reliability issues. Ford's is likely going to regret selling me a car, if future issues I may experience are handled in this manner.

My dealer told me that the 12v is covered by the original warranty but not the Ford extended warranty because the 12v is considered a consumable.

They sort of have a point, I don't see any federal agency cracking down on Ford because Ford takes the position that the customer should pay for a new 12v battery on a car once it hits 3 years old. How much of a problem did a specific vehicle really have if the 12v does in fact last over 3 years?

Fair point on the battery being a consumable, although my anecdotal experience even here in the desert where the summers swiftly kick batteries to the curb is that they last longer than 3 years (usually not more than 4-5 though).

Unless I’m misreading this (and I could be), this TSB is incredibly vague. No VINs specified. No offending software versions specified. Basically, if there is a drain detected, reprogram all the modules. But this doesn’t help everyone who already had to replace their dead 12vs just a few months out of warranty.
Actually, it might. If it was software that caused your original 12v to fail, if you don't update the software your new 12v might become victim #2. But yeah, they could have found the problem and released the TSB before so many owners experienced angst and were out $$$.

It looks like they had to do a bunch of module updates, which is probably why they charge the $700 (still seems high but whatever). They also ended up replacing the HVBJB since apparently that crapped out as well. It only took 4 days so at least it was quick.

Next time I'll just replace the 12v battery myself.
