I’ve recently bought a MME AWD extended range 2023. I’ve just done a relatively long journey with my iPhone on the wireless charger pad. The phone stopped charging as it said it was getting too hot. The back of the phone and the pad were very warm to the touch. Has anyone else experienced this…. Thanks in advance.

There are some aftermarket charging pads that work a lot better. In my case, I opted for a magsafe charger that mounts to the back of the center screen, and I just ran the wire down the side of the screen, secured with a little electrical tape, and then it plugs into the USB port. I like it better, because if I need to look at my phone, it's in a heads up position (although not all that necessary with CarPlay/AA)

This is the charging pad that I see a lot of people talking about:

I can vouch for the TWRAPS. Works great, no overheating, phone stays secure.

2021 Job 1 Car here. Same issue from the beginning. I would venture to guess 100% of us have experienced the over-heated phone if they have driven more than 45 mins with it on the charger. They did send me a new pad but it does not matter. As a matter of fact it does not charge at all now.

The fix appaears some of the other manufacturers are "air-cooling" thier phone chargers to prevent over heating.

My fix: I just plug it in with a small 6 inch cord.

Odd, my 22 along with many others used to do that. Ford had a TSB for it. Once they applied that, no more overheating for the past 2 years.

BTW, I love my $10 fix.

I'll vouch for the TWRAPS with one caveat.... it isn't fast charging by any stretch of the imagination. The magnet is strong so the phone locks on well. And it DOES charge. But if you're actively using Carplay or ANdroid Auto, it's a very slow charge. Like maybe 10-20% over the course of an hour at best. BUT, it does lock in well, and it supports two phones at the same time. So overall, it's a MASSIVE improvement over OEM.

I've had wireless charging on my last 3 vehicles (going back a number of years), and very occasionally the phone would stop charging because it would get too hot. I noticed with prior Samsung phone in my prior car that services I was using (GPS, bluetooth music, etc) would start to glitch long before any overheating would occur. Electronics hate heat (and deep freezing). Just the act of charging the phone wirelessly creates heat, add on the heat generated internally when doing any amount of work and some phones just can't dissipate the heat fast enough. Cumulative heat buildup at a rate that exceeds dissipation is the underlying issue.

It's not unique to Ford's deployment of the tech.

Yep!

Never used it since the first time it cooked my phone.

Not a deal breaker for me as I usually start my days with a fully charged ‘phone and rarely need to connect to charge, even on those looooooooonnnnnng road trips, Carplay is usually so good.

My iPhone 11 heats up excessively on the charging pad of my 2024 GT. The phone hasn’t produced a fault (yet), but I too decided to switch to a charging cable for longer trips.
