Although US sales rose 16% in May, Ford’s EV sales fell short of expectations. Even with employee prices and other discounts, Ford sold just over 6,700 electric vehicles last month, 25% fewer than in May 2024.

The Mustang Mach-E was the only electric model with higher sales compared to last year, with 4,724 units sold (+11%).

While the headline is true, it’s not a news story because it gives no context.

Why did they fall? Was there a big increase last year? What about month over month sales? What’s the current 3, 6 mo trend? What about a rolling 12 months number? What are the inventory numbers like?

Year over year numbers with no context doesn’t really tell us much.

News organizations aren't supposed to add opinion and context. They're supposed to report the news objectively. i.e., here are the facts.

Now, if they asked Ford for comment, and Ford said, "Well, we had supply line issues with the 2025 F-150 Lightnings, or 'Consumers consistently said they like the new x feature on the 2025 Mach-E", well then that's another matter.

Hard to sell what’s not on the lots to sell. Having a few standard range ‘24 Mach E Select available in white isnt a compelling choice. We are in June and have no ‘25 options to purchase. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to do the math there.

That said, I’m kinda pissed at Ford for not working to seize the opportunity in front of them. I may own a Chinese EV down the road the way this is shaping up as I’m never buying ICE again.

They really cost cut the Lightning for 2025. No standard spare. No securicode keypad. Flash got a smaller ER battery. No work surface on XLT/Flash. No diff lock without max tow package. No more onboard scales.
I'm happy to have purchased a 24 Lightning Lariat for sure instead of waiting on the 26's. I know they are trying to hold the pricing to 24 levels, but some of the things they removed are not available as options and that really messes things up.

Yeah, if I needed to replace my Lightning or buy another one at this time, I would definitely be tracking down a '24 if possible. The '25s got optimized by the Department of Cheapening.

As for Ford's EV sales being down for May, they were down in April too... Because there is so little inventory and the Mach-E has been slow to roll onto dealership lots. I know Mach-E sales are also being effected by the new Model Y and Tesla having great pricing with the tax incentives and matching Ford's finance rates... And competition from GM and Hyundai/ Kia. I swear Kia EV6's and Ioniq 5's around me are self-replicating.

That’s hilarious.

What I asked for were facts and context. Back in the days of REAL journalism we got that.

But that died when the newspapers died.

We used to have a small section in the papers called “opinion.” And that was perfectly acceptable as well.

Now the “news” is almost all opinion and speculation, or half assed stories like this one with sensationalist headlines and no content.

It would be nice to know the facts. More sales data, trends and maybe some context as to what’s actually going on.

But news outlets don’t have the budget nor time to have someone do real research and write stories anymore. Even just basic “investigative journalism” would be nice.

I'll second the idea that if they are having trouble with sales, it's got a lot to do with inventory and availability. It took me 2 weeks to locate a "in stock" MME in Florida and that was with doing statewide searches. My only choice short of taking a train down to Miami was to drive up to South Georgia.
As a previous owner I was fine with not seeing it first but a first time buyer is going to want to see, touch, and drive the car first.

You can add context without injecting opinion or subjective bias. Not doing so is just lazy "journalism".

Last May had 23’s freshly price slashed with a 0% financing deal and 24’s on the lot also.

What did this May have?
