I was heading to a gathering of friends on the Keweenaw Peninsula. I didn't want to do this as a single long day, so I added a detour along the entire length of M-22 through the Leelanau Peninsula. This was my first foray into a area with limited charging or long gaps between chargers along the route.

I started with a good charge, and was able to make the Electrify America (EA) site in Bay City near a Meijer. I started the charge session, and got lunch at the Culvers across the parking lot. Next stop was the EA site near a Meijer in Cadillac. I left out the back way and headed for Manistee and the start of M-22. I stopped at Inspiration Point. This was a great stop, but the low clouds limited what could be seen. I stopped at a Red E charger just off the road in Empire for a quick charge. I did some shopping in Glen Arbor, and then finished the run along M-22. As I left Traverse City, the storms that had been brewing all day caught up to me, and it was like driving in a car wash all the way to Gaylord. Once I finally got the charge started at the EA near the Meijer there, I walked to the near by Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner. Once done with dinner, I drove up to Mackinaw City, and used the Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) charger just before you get to the Bridge. For My '24 MME Rally, this is the long jump. The next opportunity for full speed DCFC is in Marquette. I could have charged higher, but I was originally planning to stop for the night just across the Straits. However, I pushed through to Marquette, but I would need to drive slow to get there with a comfortable buffer, or stop in Munising and not have to worry about the speed as much. I did run at my normal cruising speed and stopped near the City Hall in Munising. These are slow (for DCFC) chargers, and there are just two of them, but it was late and not an issue. I got enough to make it to Marquette which has options for fast charging, but the hotel had a Blink Level 2 charger that topped up the car nicely by morning.

Second day was much shorter as I had enough to make it all the way to Houghton in one jump without issue. I charged at the ChargePoint on the Parking Desk while I got lunch at The Library Restaurant. I finished the day with a drive out to Copper Harbor, mostly to check on the chargers there. I got a quick drink at the Mariner North while getting a few electrons from the Red E Leve l 2 chargers in the parking lot. I had enough charge for the rest of my stay. I will also add that the Rally loved getting off the pavement.

The return trip was a single day back with stops in Houghton (charged on the Parking Desk again with breakfast at Suomi Home Bakery & Restaurant), Marquette (charged at the Tesla Supercharger near the Meijer while getting lunch at the Burger King a short hike away), Mackinaw City (back at the RAN site with dinner at Scalawags), and Saginaw (EVgo at the Flying J).

Most of the charge sessions were low drama, but a few are worth mention:
  • The EA in Cadillac has 1 of 4 stations down, and one of the other stations would not activate for a Rivian. (The other two were in use when I drove up.)
  • The EA in Gaylord would not activate with Plug & Charge or the EA app, but the FordPass app worked.
  • The Flo charger in Munising worked, but it was 23 KW. The unit I did not use did not have a working credit card reader, but is reported to provide 50 KW.
  • I needed to use the WiFi from the Mariner North to get the connection needed to activate the Level 2 charger in Copper Harbor. I would get an RFID from Red E if I was going to be around here more often. The DCFC unit is an abandoned Enel X unit, and while it had power, I was unable to activate it. It might work with an RFID, but that has yet to be demonstrated.
  • There was a Level 2 Rivian charger in Calumet that I was also not able to activate.
I was never stuck, or even close to stuck. There were options, and you are never that far from a charger of some kind. There was even a 120 V plug on the outside of the cabin where I stayed. There are other areas of the Upper Peninsula where one would need to plan a bit closer, but trip was no drama.

Thanks for this, looking at doing the Saginaw-Bay area to Houghton run myself once my car finally arrives and I was a bit concerned about charging in the U.P. Sounds like if I stick to my normal route I should be fine which is reassuring!

It's good to see that charging in the UP is doable... it is much better than a few years ago but still looks kinda sketchy to me.

Surprisingly, UP is okay. Wisconsin on the other hand is an unmitigated disaster. We did a trip around Lake Michigan in 2023 with kids and a dog and before we had access to Tesla SC. It was great except in Wisconsin.

My wife and I recently did a trip around Lake Superior. Canada was actually pretty good for charger access, especially with a NACS adapter and Tesla chargers. My one close call there was at Wawa. They had a Petro Canada and a Tesla station. I was thinking there’d be no problem. But then the Petro Canada was down and I had trouble getting the Tesla chargers started. The guy at the gas station said that non-Tesla’s weren’t working. I tried again, this time activating first, then plugging in. It worked. Better yet, I never got billed. 🤷‍♂️

Charged at hotel in Sault St Mairie, MI. Then off to Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point. Planned to charge at Munising, but the DCFC was down. Fortunately had enough charge to make it to Marquette. That was about 250 miles and still had 40 miles left

Charged at city parking in Houghton and ate at The Library also. Nice place. Drove to Copper Harbor and back where we charged at same place. Walked a couple blocks to try another restaurant, which was also good.

Nice to see somebody else knows where Houghton Michigan is besides me that’s where I’m from. I always wondered about taking my electric Mustang up there when I had it. My friend said the only place they had for charging was actually at Walmart so I guess they do have a few other spots to charge in Houghton. Seeing the name library that brought back memories it used to be the library bar by John Davis back in the 70s in high school and it was a great place to go drink beer and eat pizza they had an upstairs, and some of the chairs were shaped like Hands or a big baseball mitt and we were able to take One out of there upstairs all the way down the spiral staircase outside before somebody got us lol brings back memories my high school days.

Family is from here, but I spent the most time growing up just over the border from you in Louisiana. I also did Tech School at Keesler.

Sounds like a great trip! I have t been as far as the Keweenaw, but we did drive the 2017 Bolt EV from MD up to the UP of MI two years ago. There wasn’t much for DC charging, but we did just fine on L2. We charged on free L2 while we went to Mackinac Island. Then we charged up on an L2 (AmpUp network) that was attached to a vacation rental home in Munising while we did the Pictured Rocks cruise (see photo below). And finally, we L2 charged at our campsite in Grand Marais. I used one of my three 🤓 TurboCord Duals for a 16 amp charge. I like the TurboCord so much that I bought a backup and a backup for the backup (when I found a crazy good deal on new old stock units).

I just got back from few weeks visiting British Columbia. Lots of chargers, no planning required, making it a great place to visit in an EV. I really liked the new BC Hydro / Flo network 180 kW chargers. They have the same reliability and cheap price as other Flo chargers.

We made a similar trip from NE Indiana to Munising in July. Had trouble at a couple gas stations with chargers. Had no problem at Meijer's and Walmart - Electrify America and ChargePoint chargers. Our first short stop in Lansing Walmart cost us $115. Ok, $15 for electricity and $100 for some clothes the wife HAD to have. Note to self: Wife is not allowed out of the car.

We rented a room a couple blocks away from the Munising charger. Rated at 50 kW, the one on the right was putting out 40 for others but would only show error for my car. The one on the left was a measly 22 kW, but it worked. It takes a preloaded Flo app account or ChargePoint RFID card. We walked to our room while charging. The new ChargePoint charger at Presque Isle Park in Marquette is nice. We picked up a few Kwh while enjoying the view of Lake Superior.
