When an updates fails and the push button "update now" is not active, is it then because of other reasons than low 12V battery? If it was caused by the battery I assume it would be possible to try again?

It means the OTA server needs to authorize another attempt first. Each attempt has to be approved, usually takes a day between attempts. Try again tomorrow, or let it install on its own schedule. If the OTA expires, then it will stay like that indefinitely.
