Hey guys,

New here and I need some help/advice. Just had the HVJB recall repair done 2 weeks ago and now I had a warning wrench appear. I took back to the dealership and they have found metal shavings in the motor assembly at only 68k mi. The dealership said this part warranty expired at 60k mi.

Is it odd that this part failed at only 68k mi? Could the HVJB repair have some how caused this issue? Thanks!!!

Metal shavings in the drive unit have nothing to do with the HVBJB. They are generally a result of a failed oil pump in the drive unit. Since the drive unit is part of the electric powertrain, it’s part of the federally-mandated 8/100K warranty, as @MG101 stated. Sorry to hear you are having this issue. ??

INTERESTING!

Do you mean metal shavings in the motor or the transmission oil?

Reason I ask is that I had my transmission oil changed when the HVJB was changed along with a service while it was in at dealership.

Got them to save me a sample of old oil and had it analysed along with a sample of virgin oil.

Along with silicon I have 192 ppm iron in the oil, some copper and other wear particles.

Did this to provide an informed view on whether to keep the old nag now it’s nearing 100,000miles and 40months.

Got a load of quotes for new cars, as near to my Premium as possible, also GT, a new Capri and each doesn’t have something my old Stang has so decided to keep.

Decided that even if transmission fails, a new transmission costs cĀ£5k and I’d lose that on new car the moment it leaves showroom so decided to keep and live with the consequences.

Watch this space……….?

Please define "transmission" to which you are referring. I'm aware that the electric motors have a oil system of sorts that will eventually require a lubricant replacement at high mileage, but a transmission in the traditional sense is a new concept to me in a EV.

Look it up.

Has to be something between the motor, electric or ICE, and the back wheels to transmit drive, hence the term ā€œtransmissionā€.

At the risk of being a bit pedantic:

"The Mustang Mach-E does not have a traditional gearbox like internal combustion engine vehicles. Instead, it uses an integrated drive module (iDM)1. This module combines the electric motor and the transmission into a single unit, which helps to keep the design compact and efficient1. The iDM delivers power directly to the wheels without the need for multiple gears. "

WHAT a load of bollocks!

Never said it had a ā€œtraditional gearboxā€, still has a transmission, though.

Sorry to hear about your situation and please keep us posted if it is covered. I’m on the fence on adding the extended warranty on mine or not as if the battery and motor are all covered for the 8yr I don’t think it’s worth it.

I found a great video showing a part by part breakdown and reassembly of the motors and how the transmission is built into it. The geared differential portion would be all enclosed in the case where it is oiled. This can be seen around the 22 minute mark.

Best technical breakdown I have seen.

Best of luck with your warranty claim and hope they make it right!

Picture below of the Motor/stator on the right with the transmission and open differential on the left. Really cool design with the shaft from the differential going through the whole unit back to the right side for that wheel

how did you find out the motor failed?
i.e. was there a particular DTC thrown and recorded? Did you get a "service vehicle soon", or ???

That’s really very interesting, hadn’t realised the motor was ā€œwetā€ with transmission fluid drip fed over the stator.

That may explain where the copper particulate wear matter is coming from according to the transmission oil analysis I commissioned.

Silicon comes from wearing seals.

Thnx for this, DK_Min

Don’t tell EasyPass there’s a transmission ?

Just trying to continue my education ad infinitum.
You say tomaato, I say tomato.

I watched video, and am that much more aware of the inner workings now. I'm looking forward to the day that I will need my first "oil change" that the dealer always asks me about in the once per year (or so) visit there that occurs.
