My wife and I each bought cancelled orders, and each of our ordered cars have been sold by the dealer.

Who do I write to to get our $500.00 deposits back from?

Is there a single answer?

The dealer has your deposit even if you placed the order on Ford's website.

You said you both bought MMEs that were customer orders that backed out. If it was with the same dealer you had the deposit with, are you sure they did not apply your deposit to those purchases?

Same dealer, yes. We still had active orders for a car to come in someday. That didn't change when we bought another car.

The deposit is not shown as credited back on our sales slips, which means we still had deposits on cars that were still on order.

If you didn't want to keep cars on order, you could have had them apply the $500 to each car you bought, assuming it was the same dealer. My dealer asked me if I wanted to keep the car on order.

Picked up a cancelled order at a different dealer. I walked into my local dealer (where I placed the original order) and asked them for a refund. As @heisnuts said, the dealer has your deposit no matter how you paid for it.

If the dealer is honest, they will give it back just like mine did. No questions asked. The manager just had to confirm they got my deposit by checking the paperwork from Ford, but once he did that, he returned the deposit. It took about 15 minutes.

Yeah so just call the dealer and ask them for the credit. I put the 500 on my credit card and when I cancelled within 2 days I had a credit on my card. As @mkhuffman said, no questions asked. I did it all over the phone.

I'm curious, did the dealer make you pay a markup on the ones you ended up buying? If so, how much?
