A battery pack replacement that is 5/6th the purchase price of the car seems suspect. We are at the inconvenient point in EV history where battery cost is excellent from the cost-per-kWh perspective, but the overall costs of an adequately -sized pack are still very high. By that, I mean it was low enough that we all got on board, but high enough that we whine about it anyway. ?

Interesting to note individual decision methods here!

I think this case is an outlier and insurance claim was the right answer. What did so much damage that the shield and casing were damaged to the point that the cooling system was potentially ruptured? What went wrong in the Hyundai design that this caused an unwarrantable issue? Not replacing this pack is a Hyundai corporate decision. At some point, you can’t design enough of a tank to cover every situation.

What we are seeing, at least in the US, is that the range/cost equation is still not good enough for most commuters. The bar of entry is still too high. That drives the narrative which says EV’s are too expensive. We don’t do a good job with cost equivalency, so I’m not going down that rabbit trail except to acknowledge the narrative. I jumped on board to signal the interest to automakers and spur future investment. I don’t hold any illusion that the current MME isn’t a 1.0 product. The lessons-learned will fuel innovation in future products. I desire for my EV to last a couple decades, but my planning is built around that 8-year pack warranty.

That depends on the age and mileage of the $5k car. It could be nearing the end of its life cycle no different than the car with the bad battery.
The $5k used leaf doesn’t have that much mileage. Most BEV batteries seem to be good to 150k or more.

But either way, it would be financially foolish to pay 20k for a battery in a 5k car.

Even if the 5k car battery died, you could do that 4x before you were worse off.
