I ended up getting an Outlander PHEV to replace my Wife’s MME. It gets about 45 miles of EV range which is plenty for our local driving. Current tank of gas has 700 miles with 1/4 tank remaining. We will be taking it up to New Hampshire and back this May for a 3k mile road trip.

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate your time and recommendations. I hadn’t heard of the new Mazda PHEVs and may look into those once they are available. Had a 95 Mazda Miata a long time ago and it was one of my favorite cars.
I've owned 3 mazda's so far and they've all been amazing. I really miss my cx5 (sold it to get the mme), the only issue I had with that one in like 10 years was a bad MAF sensor, $20 on Amazon, 3 screws to remove and worked like new afterwards.

I'll likely get another one when it's time to replace my mini van.

Only annoying thing is that the 1.5L engine never turns on but requires an oil change every year.
Interesting. Fusion Energi was 20,000 miles or 2 years, whichever came first.

Of course you can also just reset the oil monitor and not change it.

Stay away from the Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram group of PHEVs I have three family members that have them, ALL have had loads of issues with their Powertrains their reliability is not so great. Chrysler recently had to recall all Pacifica Hybrids because they were randomly shutting off on the highway (happened to my brother’s pacific over a dozen times).
If I was in your shoes I would do either a RAV4 Prime, or if your wanting to stick to ford the Escape Plug In Hybrid.

It has a Chademo DC port. Interestingly, it is 3 row seating and 7.8 inch ground clearance. Available 1500W AC outlets. A Swiss Army knife type of vehicle.

My ‘14 Fusion Energi used to complain that it needed an oil change every 3500 miles until I changed its parameters. Prior to that, I just reset the monitor. Given that the gas engine only came on during “powertrain maintenance” cycles or when I hit the throttle hard, I pretty much pull less than 1K miles worth of mileage on the gas engine while it was running for each oil change anyhow. ??

I'd be very curious how you like it after 6 months and how it hold ups. The lease folks on Leasehckr seem to NOT recommend Mitsubishis and they lease the worst crap just to get a good deal lol.

The new Outlander PHEV is pretty nice. I had one of the last generation before getting the MME. It was only rated for 22 miles of EV range, but the new one does much better with its bigger battery. The only real issue with the Outlander is its poor fuel economy when running on gas. I averaged about 25mpg, which is in a whole different league than the 42mpg I get with the RAV4 Prime.

Is that the PHEV that has DCFC?
Technically, yes. But it's Chademo and has a top charging speed in the 25kW range. I never understood the point of DCFC for a PHEV. If you're paying the DCFC rates on a road trip, it's not any cheaper than gas. And filling the gas tank is a whole lot quicker.

We have only had it for a couple months but so far so good. As for the Chademo port don’t know if I will ever use it? I was going to try it out at the Florida Mall yesterday but I have never seen an EA station so busy! Doesn’t make sense to wait in line for a Chademo charge!! Lol

The real test for fuel economy will come next month on our road trip to New Hampshire! I am hoping for at least 30 mpg? So far we are beating the EPA estimates on EV range and MPGE!! We averaged 3.5 miles per kwh on the MME but on the Outlander it has been around 2.9 miles per kWh so the MME wins on that point!

That station has been slammed for almost a year (blame free chargingand worse in the past 6 months due to Walmart vans hogging stalls in the afternoon. In the summer of 2021 it was only German EVs there and fairly empty.

Your 2.9 mi/KWh efficiency sounds about right. My RAV4 Prime hovered around 3.0 mi/kWh.

Shortly after buying our MME in July of 2021 we went on a 900 mile trip and stopped for charging 5 times at various EA stations. I had all of them to myself! Those were the days!! Lol
