Anyone have drive modes suddenly change while actively driving/braking?

2666 miles. Driving at 35 MPH today and a 200 mile round trip using intelligent cruise in "Whisper mode". 5 miles from the end I kicked off cruise with the brake pedal to slow to a traffic light with line of cars.... All of a sudden a message came "Drive mode unavailable" and it reverted to "Engage mode". I saw the brake coach appear. After the stop and moving on, I checked and it was in "Engage mode". I did not select this mode.

Just a strange occurrence. I went back to Whisper and continued on. The issue is steering and braking can instantly change when drive modes change, especially in the Winter on slippery roads. I would love to know why this happened. Could a wheel have slipped and the ABS triggered, without me knowing, and it reverts to Engage?

Thanks in advance.

Similar thing happened to me today. Was driving in Whisper on Intelligent Cruise (needed to conserve range for my trip), and randomly, it switched to unbridled mode. Quirks like this kinda hit the confidence in Ford's software testing...

Did either of your incidents occur in very high ambient temperatures? @macchiaz-o has reported a change of modes in the high Phoenix heat.

I've had this happen three or four times. Most of those were extremely hot days with the car baking in the sun for hours prior to the drive. Lost drive modes early on in the drives (in one case, it was before I left the parking space).

But the most recent loss occurred a few days ago on a cooler day, maybe somewhere between high 90s and 105F? (We lent some sunshine to the Pacific Northwest.) On that drive, my drive modes were sent to detention while I was trying to pass slower traffic on the highway. I might have been going high 70s allegedly.

Anyway, I haven't fully understood what's happening since the vehicle and owners manual don't explain WHY drive modes can be disabled.

There is a chance that service information may be a bit more descriptive. I think @SnBGC has access to the shop manual...

Okay, can we just take a moment and let soak in that somewhere between the high 90s and 105 is considered a "cooler" day? It hit 90 degrees here yesterday and people were melting.

I know we say it too often but "it's a dry heat" here. Until late July into September when the humidity picks up a little and its yucky.

I grew up in Florida and any time spent outside there was WAY WORSE. I went back a few years ago, drove a few hours from airport to destination and it was fine... Until I opened the door to get out of the car and was immediately stifled by the thick air that was dragging any remaining energy out of me.

All that said.... These last few weeks have been pretty miserable here. Not from the heat but from the smell of forest fires and the high smog conditions.

A blast furnace is also a dry heat :) But I know what you mean. The 90 degree day we had yesterday was accompanied with 90% humidity, which is just gross. Most people don't have central A/C around here, but I have 4 window units that were cranking. Luckily, today it's back down to a reasonable 68 degrees outside.

I have noticed this here as well. Wish that there was more notice other than my battery percentage on the guessometer disappearing and the orange lines/menu button color on my infotainment screen...

My car has never switched driving modes on me. I just keep myself in Engaged because, with One Pedal Driving, I’ve never noticed a significant difference between any of the modes.

I haven't had it switch drive modes on me, but it has switched on the intelligent cruise once or twice and brake hold turns off all the time. I find myself turning the brake hold back on every couple of days. ??‍♂

Interesting. I had the brake hold on for 4 weeks straight, I turned it off because I started to get a “hitch” when I stop on a hill and accelerate after wanting to move again. The timing of the brake release and my foot on the accelerator was not perfect. But it never turned off on it’s own.

I just had this happen to me today.

'23 GT with only 230 miles. Was driving to work and was in Unbridle using cruise control w/ lane keeping (no hands free because of outdated maps) and after maybe 20 miles I had the message "Drive mode unavailable" pop up. Didn't realize what it meant at first until I had to turn off cruise control for traffic and saw it had switched me to Engage from Unbridle.

It was 30-32 degrees outside, so not heat related and it switched back to Unbridle with no problem so I have no idea why it happened. Was weird though.

Sometimes a "Glitch in the Matrix" occurs when an OTA is downloading.
