Don't really have any DCFC around where I'm at, so I can't test this easily myself. I know the built-in navigation will pre-condition the battery when you put your destination as a DCFC, but what if you use Apple Maps with CarPlay? There's some pretty good integration between the car and CarPlay, so I thought maybe it would do pre-conditioning as well. Thanks!

I didn’t know preconditioning has anything to do with the destination.

To the best of my knowledge Apple Maps currently can only read battery level from the car - it doesn't have a way to tell the car to precondition.

The built-in nav however does do this if you use that nav (and only that nav, no others do it) to route you to a DCFC location. I've not tried it myself, but that's what's been written up in multiple threads on this forum.

Oh, and for the pedantic, yes, Apple Maps also sends turn instructions to the IPC for display when it is routing you to a location. But it doesn't tell the car to pre-condition the battery.

I M pretty sure that it doesn’t yet Precon using CarPlay, but the next generation CarPlay might have something in it for that. ??

Currently no mapping system outside of Ford's in-car navigation system triggers pre-conditioning.

About a year ago, Apple Maps supported EV enabled features such as stations and battery levels predictions at arrival. Ford was the first to support the Apple Maps EV features with the Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, later adding "next turn" directions in the driver control screen. Which to me means Doug Field is leveraging Apple contacts to the benefit of Ford and customers.

I am hopeful this the feature set will expand. As it stands, Apple also needs to do development work before (or in tandem) with car manufactures to enable preconditioning capability. Hopefully last year's features was a stepping stone to that reality.

June 5 - 9 is WWDC, Apple's developer conference. While that won't be the time software will be in your hands, announcements for features in the fall or beyond will be made.

Which is basically pointless. iOS 16 was to bring a full overhauled CarPlay UI that allows complete integration with the vehicle. Not a single peep since. Heck, they haven’t even gotten CarPlay scaling down yet for the entirety of iOS 16!

Nope, has to be the Ford nav only. I've tested it and confirmed it activates with Ford Nav and not Apple Maps.

They never said iOS 16. They said Late 2023 Vehicles, so iOS 17.

Which Power Up added preconditioning?

Pretty sure I read that Apple's next iteration of CarPlay will include more ability to control vehicle systems, such as HVAC, lights, and yes battery preconditioning. WWDC should give a timeframe on that, but while Apple will make that available, it will be entirely dependent upon Ford to allow CarPlay access.

It would be a good thing to know if there's an ambient temperature minimum when one should absolutely use Ford's nav when charging to a DCFC, or if it's always advantageous to do so.

With a Tesla the graphic indicator that the battery is preconditioning kicks on all of the time when navigating to a Supercharger, so I assume preconditioning is always occurring and advantageous.

No it wasn't, they gave a "Preview" of CarPlay 2nd gen. It was never intended to be released with iOS 16. There was no planned CarPlay enhancements in iOS 16 due to the 2nd gen work being done. We "Might" see it in iOS 17.0 or it's possible to see it come out in iOS 17.2 or .3 depending on when it's needed to support vehicles coming to market.

I advise those who watch the keynote to pay attention to every word used. They are very measured and specific in how they make announcements. (Usually due to time constraints and other reasons.)

Not to pile on, but as everyone else noted the announcement was for late 2023 at the earliest.

To be fair, this was one of the very rare times Apple announced something that was more than a year out of a (scheduled) release. If it wasn't for third-parties (car manufactures) needing to co-develop and potentially have government regulators evaluating, we wouldn't have heard about it. This was Apple getting ahead of the Apple rumors news to control enough of the narrative.

Ah, my bad, since it was part of the iOS 16 keynote, I guess I just checked it off in my mind as part of iOS 16.
