We're going to need the additional stations. GM announced they have plans to only sell zero emission vehicles by 2035 (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/29/business/general-motors-electric-cars.html). We currently have 1.6 million BEVs in the US and 286 million ICE vehicles. So in theory, we would need to increase the charging infrastructure by 178x if all the ICE vehicles were replaced by BEVs.

There are 168,000 retail locations in the U.S. that sell fuel to the public. (www.fueleconomy.gov )

Also, can our electrical infrastructure support that?
It is going to be a challenge but I think the whole point is to change the way we look at our transportation and energy infrastructure. In Colorado, the major provider is starting to switch to time-of-day rates to encourage use in the middle of the night. They are also working on more renewable energy sources since the costs now make more sense than new coal plants. There will need to be similar initiatives all over the country to support an EV future.

NOT TODAY. The funny thing about governments investing in useful infrastructure: it creates jobs now AND in the future. Many decried FDR's programs of the 30's as "make-work projects", but a lot if that is STILL productive today- allowing commerce to happen in many places where private funding of that infrastructure would not have happened because it wasn't profitable.

Yeah, the utilities in NY are trying to get everyone to switch to a time of use plan as well. The problem is that my wife is working from home indefinitely so it would kill us with daytime AC usage/energy usage. I can get a second meter for an EV, but installation is a huge expense. I don't know why they cant offer some sort of electricity discount tied to the smart chargers provided that the charging is done during off peak hours.

Yeah, I'm worried about that -- my wife and I are both working 100% from home right now and we're hoping to continue as much as possible even after the pandemic.

They can. Mine does. I really don’t understand why any utility company would install a second meter instead.

Yep, I mentioned in another thread we need another project similar to the rural electrification effort.
