I don't have one, but in these pictures it is pretty clear that the brighter pony is poorly designed, i.e. the light is so glaring that the pony is blurry. The bottom shot is clear and crisp. If I ever had one, I would definitely use the resistor.
Hi Rick, so when photographing these bright ponies, or any type of bright light in a photo that has a much darker surrounding area, that bright light entering through the lens scatters because of the various layers of glass. This is known as lens flare. You can eliminate it by using a narrow aperture (f/11-f/22). A wide aperture (f/1.8) that are in phone cameras will easily blur a bright object like this. That is why when you see most of the photos taken of these ponies, they look blurry. Had I taken the photos with my DSLR and stopped down the aperture of the lens, I would have eliminated the blurring effect of the light.

All that said I personally prefer the pony dim like the OEM one.

I don’t think it’s going out. While I don’t have one on my car, the one I’ve been using for testing is a little less bright in that area also. I don’t think it’s as dim as yours but hard to tell in photos. Maybe there were some that are more dim that others? I have no problem sending you another pony when I get more in stock. Two days ago I shipped the last one of the second batch of 50. Bruce is shipping another batch of 50 but I’m leaving to go out of the country on Sunday and won’t be back until Thursday the 11th.

Maybe some others here will chime in to let us know if theirs is slightly dim in that area.

Personally
Mine’s been like that from the first day. Probably just how the LED spacing worked out. Brother in laws are picky when they are jealous. Just tell him your wild pony just got its front hoof dirty.

I was showing off my pony light to my brother in law and he pointed out the lower left hoof....the one from the pony's back leg isn't as bright as the rest of the pony. I recall the entire emblem was bright without any dim spots. Can you confirm if this is normal or if mine is starting to go out?

You can kind of see it in this picture. It's more noticable in person.
Mine is this way too. It did not look like this immediately after installation. Something is going wrong with the LED under that foot.

Interesting, I don't have that issue at all with my BSKT pony:

Then I am guessing there is an LED down near that corner and mine was damaged during manufacturing.

Since the only person that is going to see it that close is the guy I am about to plow into on the sidewalk (it is a mustang after all), I am not going to worry about it unless more sections go dark.

Honestly, the pony is too bright, I am going to be adding the load resistor to dim it...once the weather cools off. It will either blend nicely or it will make it stand out even more. Wait and see.

With you - same issue with the toe but I will be replacing the pony and adding a 100ohm resistor. The early fall weather here is great but I need to find time to do it. Maybe next weekend.

I was curious why some people say the front pony is too bright so I went out to the car and took a pic crouched down with the headlights aimed directly at the camera. The headlights definitely out-illuminate the pony. I personally don't think it's too bright, but I get it's completely subjective to each own's personal preference. But I don't think it's any brighter than any other EV out there with front emblem/accent lighting features.

Not the best photo but the brightness on my 23 Select (low configuration) looks identical to the brightness of the pony.

Spence (Mr. Toejam) why didn't you let me know yours was damaged I can send you a replacement. I just got to Europe yesterday and will be here until the 11th so no ponies will be shipping until then but I can take care of it when I get back. Also, if you want one of those resistors I can send one out at the same time or if you get one, just make sure it is a 100 ohm, 50 watt.

I have to say, more people definitely like the super bright pony. However like you, I like it a little less bright.

I honestly didn’t think anything was wrong until a few others posted that their ponies have bright, pretty toenails.

No rush. I’ve been so busy (says the retired guy) that I still haven’t installed the new wire harness. Also still deciding if I want to add the USB/accessories outlet in the frunk.

As for the resistor, I’m an engi-nerd, so I actually had some laying around. I salvaged them from something years ago.

Enjoy your last few days in Europe.

I ran out of front ponies about a week before I left (have shipped over 150) but Bruce shipped another 60 and supposed to be delivered before I get back (I hope).

On that resistor just make sure it is at least 50W. 😊

Spence, just checked with the friend that’s staying at my place while I’m gone and had him open boxes that were delivered and one of them were the front ponies. I’ll ship out Thursday if they are ok.

So it's decided that the front pony light shouldn't have a darker hoof?
Some do and some don't. Some members care and others don't. If you have one that does and it bothers you, let me know. I still have to check the batch that was sent to me to see what they are like.

Good morning everyone. So I think I may know what is wrong with your front pony. My front pony looked great for about a week. Then one of his hooves got “dirty”. Then he decided to go for a swim and his entire lower half was “under water” (not lit). Then, he died a was buried under ground (completely dead). I pulled the entire thing apart and the pictures show what I found. The inside of the pony sprung a leak when I pulled on it. You can actually see water coming out of it in the pictures. This thing will never last unless there are serious modifications. Not sure who is designing these things, but I would assume they should take water intrusion into account. Oh well, live and learn.
