I started a thread last week about my first road trip with some questions and observations. One question I forgot to ask...

Can your car (or more specifically, your air conditioner) be on while charging at EA? I needed to get some work done while charging, but it was over 100 degrees and I didn't want to mess up the process. At some point (maybe while on the phone with EA) I was told to make sure the car was OFF...that made me hesitant.

Plus -- if the answer is yes, is there a process or order of things? In other words, does it have to be off to start the session, then can be turned on?

I'm sure there's a simple answer.

Like @breeves002 said, yes you can keep the car on while DCFC. I also sometimes don't turn it off before plugging in as I hop in right away and do some emails while having a bite and keep the AC running.

I don’t shut the car down if I’m leaving the HVAC on, I just plug in (since I am a lazy dog). ??

It's fine to just plug in while on or off. The only caveat Ford has mentioned in this way is if it's cold outside. You shouldn't run your heater at least for the first few minutes (I'd do at least 10 or as long as you can stand it) of DCFC charging when it's cold so the batteries can come up to temp to make charging faster.

I've been keeping my car and A/C on. I recently had to call EA support for an issue on their end. I asked the same question and the support person said to turn the car off before initializing the charge and then you can start the car, for the A/C, while it's charging. So, from now on I will do as such.

Never turned mine off. Turn off heater in winter per Ford. It will shut off at 30 minutes of sitting anyway. Let AC run.

so the message that pops up on the screen when you’re charging and you start the car, it basically says unplug if you’re gonna leave the car running, is there a reason for that?

Thread is 2 years old.

When you are plugged in, you cannot start the car. You turn it on, but it is not running. Unplug, then start. This prevents you from driving away plugged in.

If it is already running, it will stay on for 30 minutes, and then you can say to stay on if you see the prompt, or turn off the shutdown timer.

I knew it was old. I was trying to find something somewhere that spoke about this, and I didn’t know where to actually make a statement because I saw somebody that was talking about conditioning her battery or something and everybody else is talking about we start charging. We just leave the car running or I guess they we’re saying the car still running and they just plugged in no one ever mentioned that popping up on the dash like that’s why I asked.

To charge the 12v battery, people start the car, turn off the shutdown timer, and let it run.

Or, it charges while actively charging the HVB. Once charging ends, so,does 12v charging.

A recent update may have changed the 12v issues, we are all waiting to see.

Well, most of you know since I’ve owned a car I haven’t had any updates, but my battery stays up in the high 90s all the time, and it is new of course, but so far so good.

That’s my style. Off at first, then once I’m charging I turn it back on.
