Just completed our third long trip with the Mach-E. Each time we've traveled, we've noted how flawed the design of the cargo cover is. On this last trip, it really stood out how poorly it is designed.

Issues:

- Cover is in the way when you want to fully load the cargo bay - On this last trip, we carefully laid out the contents to best fit. The cover had to be removed, stored in the passenger area, then laid back over the top when we had loaded the back. If it retracted, this would not be an issue. Of course if it was retractable, then we couldn't have just laid it over the cargo when we were done loading (as we did).

- Cover catches on items in the cargo area when closing - as the hatch closes, the leading edge catches on things and comes off the back clips. We have to reach in and hold the leading edge up and then push the hatch button and retract our arm as it closes, or have the other person hold the leading edge from the rear seat while closing the hatch.

- Wind - yesterday was a great example. Ran some errands, high winds. Opened the hatch and the cover started flailing about widely. If it was retractable, non-issue. Ending up having it come off more than once, so on our next stop we turned the car into the wind and then opened the hatch.

It would be great if Ford would redesign this to be more usable.

I store mine under the rubber floor mat in the back. It can also go under the false floor if you don't have the mats. We rarely use ours.

This is a redesign of the retractable ones everyone (including Ford) used to provide. Those usually got stored in the garage or basement.

I'm not looking to store it.

With the windows up I find it marginally serviceable... but with the windows down, it flaps around and comes unclipped. I've tried banding it to the clips but that is not ideal.

I think I'll try putting it under the floor as suggested above.

This is the first cargo cover I haven't immediately removed from the vehicle. I think I have somewhere in the garage three cargo covers from previous vehicles that I forgot to put back in the car when we sold them. Nobody has ever asked about the cover when they bought the car. Mostly I think they're a waste of plastic and resources and would be fine if we never got another one.

I think the only design I would like is one built into the hatch which would automatically cover the glass when the vehicle is parked/locked and automatically open when the vehicle is started.

We usually just throw a blanket over things we don’t want to be readily visible in our cars.

The benefit of the cover over a blanket is not showing that there is something that is covered.

I took mine out early too because I tend to drive with my windows open and it would flap wildly in the wind. Seems like the sort of thing that there should be good aftermarket alternatives for. However, I will say, I don't see how some storage space isn't lost no matter how a cargo cover is designed, though I agree it seems to be a notable amount with the Ford version.

Last thought - in some places, people will break into cars if they think there is a chance that there might be valuables inside, so the cargo cover actually makes things riskier in that circumstance because someone looking in might think there is stuff there underneath when there isn't. This logic was taken to an extreme in San Francisco recently with people just straight leaving their trunks open to deter a smash and grab.

Mine has been in the back of a closet from day 1. Just not practical for us.

With tinted windows you can't really see in anyway
