I’ve been driving my sister-in-law’s Atlas with only wired CarPlay. Same thing happened there a couple of times.
I had to unplug and plug back in to fix it.

I have been having the same issue for about 4 months. For me, it helps to switch to radio in the car and stay on that panel, which will cause CarPlay to disconnect and reconnect with functioning sound. It's an incredibly annoying bug though, I hope Ford knows about it and is looking at addressing it in a future update.
this is what worked for me too

Howdy Everyone :), I have been having this issue since iOS 17.1 came out. I "fix" it by going to the Phone list in the Sync settings, and toggling the CarPlay button (off then back on). In other cases, the audio of the phone itself doesn't automatically switch to CarPlay, and I have to swipe down on the home screen (top right), and change the audio output. When this happens, it tends to have either selected my hearing aid, or the phone itself. I don't think these issues are related, but they cause similar symptoms.

I'm on 17.4.1 but I don't have that audio issue. Instead because I have a Wifi AP in the garage my phone stays latched to that until i'm about a house down the road. This results in my phone connecting to CP was I back out of the garage, then it goes back to the radio, then starts to connect again as Im driving away, connects but doesn't start Spotify or whatever but flips to the CP screen and plays the radio. About 15 seconds after this it flashes the CP screen and starts Spotify.
My 15POSmax is mostly to blame.

After reading what some of you are having to do I'm ok with my crappy fist minute experiance as it resolves it's self.
