Hello everyone,

I am new to the Mach E forum, and I will possibly be picking my Mach E later this month. Currently, I was told that you are better off getting a 240v outlet installed for charging purposes. I have a few questions. Do you need to change the amp to something greater than 30amps for this to be possible? If not, will the 240v with the 30amp’s be enough to charge the battery quickly?

Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

Welcome! A 30A outlet will only safely supply 24A continuously. That may be enough for you, but you would need to purchase a 24A EVSE because the one that comes with the MME will draw 32A and trip your breaker.

If you‘re getting a new outlet installed, you should go with a 50A circuit and NEMA 14-50 outlet.

What kind of charger does the Mach E come with?

It comes with a 32 Amp charger that has 2 plugs: a standard household (120 V 15A), and a 14-50 (240V 40A). The 14-50 is basically a standard OVEN plug.

Just to clarify, a 14-50 is a standard range (oven) plug. A standard dryer plug is a 14-30.
So I have this next to my dryer. Can I use add a NEMA 14-50 with the 30 amps? Will that work?

crap, I always get those 2 mixed up. That explains why my toaster burns a piece of bread in 11 seconds ?

No, that would be against code. You could buy a lower power charger that has a 14-30 plug on it, like this charger from clippercreek (24 amps at 240volts): https://store.clippercreek.com/level2/level2-20-to-32/lcs-30p-nema-14-30

That will add about 12 to 16 miles' worth of range to your car per hour. Since one rarely drains down too far, that means you can top off overnight

Oh, and I'm not sure if you are aware that you can't draw the full 30 amps from that circuit. Since it takes hours to charge, you have to make sure the charger draws at 80% of the capacity of the circuit. The reason is that constant use over several hours heats up the circuit, so for safety you can't draw the full current with a car charger.

Maybe someone could post a picture of the male plug at the end of Ford's cord. The layout should be enough to show an electrician.
