Hello,

Does anyone know if the 150 kw charging speed limit for the MME is a hard limit (hardware can't do more than that) or a soft limit set in software? If it is the latter, has Ford made any indication that they will increase that speed at some point?

Thanks

It is both. No indications of increasing or decreasing it, so far. However, Darren Palmer has mentioned that other changes to the charging curve may be forthcoming (e.g. keeping a higher power rate until 90% SOC instead of steeply slowing down at 80% SOC).

Currently the CCS chargers limit the current to 500A (best case for some EA chargers, others are as low as 350A), so on a 400V system the practical limit is 200kW. But the nominal voltage of the Mach E is ~360V so the limit based on that is 180kW at 50%SoC. I have see a peak of 160kW for a short period at lower SoC, so I think the hardware current limit must be at or close to 500A. The question becomes, how long can they maintain that current without overheating the battery, the wires and the contactors in the charging circuit.

Software could be used to change the curve, but it must remain within the hardware current limits and the heating limits I mentioned above.

They could change the software to give it full beans from the DC charger the whole time, but your car would start on fire in a few minutes. Lower it some and the car won't start on fire anymore, will still charge crazy fast, but the battery might only last a couple charges before it's junk. Lower it some more, and you're starting to get a pack that lasts for 10 thousand miles. Keep lowering it until most of the packs last 100,000 miles, then ship it. That's how it works.

It's a durability question.
