Anyone else find the collision alert way to sensitive? Merging cars set mine off all the time, cross traffic in town often gets me the flashing box and beeps when there is no danger (I don't even need to take my foot off the accelerator). And then yesterday I'm going through an intersection on Rt. 64 at about 60 mph. I've got the green, all the traffic on the cross street is stopped, nobody is even sticking out a little into the intersection. All of a sudden I get the emergency beeps and the car brakes really hard, almost to a stop. Luckily no one was right behind me or I would of gotten rear ended. I hope there is a way to turn the system off, because it seems more likely to get me killed than save my life

You can try reducing the sensitivity in the drivers assistance setting to low. That might help. If it doesn’t, there might be an off toggle, I haven’t really looked for the latter.

I think there is an update to the image sensing module or something like that. Maybe it would clear this up?

This happens to all camera/vision based collision avoidance systems designed to work at high speed. They will react to ghosts some times, but should not be too often. Most of the times there will be just a warning, but you might experience auto braking kicking when it should not, commonly referred to as "phantom braking". It is just the way it is, and avoiding this is about selecting a sensitivity that is just between having too many instances of phantom braking versus not reacting to a real incident where visibility is slightly lower than normal.

Anyone driving on roads today needs to be aware of sudden braking, even when it was not necessary. Even humans sometimes will do phanom braking because of seeing something looking like something is really isnt. Turning off automatic systems because they make one or a few mistakes is a bad idea, since they are more likely to prevent an accident than to create one, even if the latter is possible.

- Make sure the top of the windscreen is somewhat clean and does not have any cracks (any cracks or damage in the camera area => replace windscreen, no repairs!)
- Make sure not to mount any equipment in the lower part of the bumper where the radar is located.
- Make sure there is no ice, leafs, or anything behind the radar cover in the middle of the lower part of front bumber (where there are no air flaps), I think it is possible to open the air flaps manually by hand and checking behind the cover. Had to to that sometimes on my previous Focus because ice could build up between the cover and the radar module (there is an air gap between).
- Set the collision warning sensitivty to low. By default the crash warning is supposed to show when the system has detected there is about 1 second until a crash will happen if nothing changes, changing til setting will change this limit slightly, giving the car slightly longer time to figure it was wrong.
- If it still causes issues there might be an issue with radar alignment, camera alignment, or mounting. Check with dealer!

When driving, also:
- The system is especially designed to react to sudden braking of the car in front. When driving really close it might react to the driver ahead tapping the brakes and then releasing, because it cannot know if the driver is going to release the brakes or not. It will warn early if it thinks the driver in front is emergency braking, and it will know even before brake lights shows. The radar is very sensitive to speed difference and will calculate the exact speed and de-accelleration rate in a millisecond.
- It might react to cars parked along the road if steering wheel is turned towards. It cannot know in advance if you are going to steer away during the last second, so it will have to warn.
- If cars are not following lanes, lane markings are not visible where lanes are turning it might have issues detecting if a car is in the other lane or not. This system is a huge improvement from previous systems only relying on steering wheel angle, but still will have a few issues, especially where line markings are not clearly visible.

it happens to me often however I used to think it was due to glitches, but I am able to reproduce the issue easily.

It almost always happens to me when I am behind a car that is reducing speed to take a right turn. The collision assist goes off if I do not reduce my speed/let go off the gas because I know they are going to move out by the time I make it there (the computer doesn't know that).

It doesn't happen every day and I am OK with this. I left the setting on High because I don't wanna compromise on safety.
Also, the collision assist has saved me a few times where he picked up a potential issue that I had not reacted to yet, I am thankful for that.

I have noted the same thing in mine... Though mine has NEVER done an automatic emergency brake in that situation like the op. The only time the brake has come in is when I legitimately am close to an impact.

I've also had the warning come on in drive throughs if the car thinks I'm accelerating too aggressively towards the stopped vehicle in front of me.. but again.. Just the lights and sounds, no automatic braking in that situation

I had the automatic brake engaging once, my garage back on a busy avenue and even though I have a good 10m of protected space when I back out of my garage it thinks the traffic is gonna hit me (sometimes). And holy shit it brakes hard!

There are a couple of systems that can be involved for that.
1) cross traffic alert
2) rear brake assist

I have turned off the rear brake assist due to it braking hard when I back into the garage sometimes. If this is causing your issues it can be turned off. The cross traffic alert could cause that possibly, and I would not recommend turning that off.

Man, the ONLY thing I hate about my MachE is the P-C assist. I have the sensitivity dialed down to the lowest setting and mine lords over my driving like you cannot believe. It is horribly over zealous at low speeds, and frequently locks the brakes when I’m inching forward. Example: like at a four way stop, I’m scooting up, following the car in front of me 5-6 feet back, and it’s as if it thinks I’m going to hammer the accelerator and ram them. Frustrating for sure.
“This car is a MUSTANG, please let it behave like one”, is a frequent thought of mine. I have an appointment at dealer next week as it has been acting up, only after I’ve been parked in the cold. Weird.

here’s my post about it:
