However, as far as I know, no one who's experienced the issue has had an OBDII dongle plugged in when they experienced it.
My MX+ was plugged in when I had the lockout issue. I did a DTC scan and the only errors that caught my attention were low system voltage on a few modules (ABS, IPMA, BECM, BCM) and no communication from BECM and BCM. I assume all were due to unplugging the 12v.

edit: went back and looked at the logs. There were also some random ABS and IPMA errors thrown. Also forgot to mention that BC worked for about 2 hours on the following drive and then I got a message that ACC wasn’t available due to dtc u2108. The issue went away with turning the car off and on and haven’t seen it since. No clue if that was related though.

Did you do the DTC scan after you experienced the lockout issue, but before you reset via the battery?

no, not really. Most people wouldn't think of it. I'd imagine the first reaction is to try and "fix" the problem as quickly as possible.
I know some DTCs get archived (though I don’t know if all do or maybe I’m misunderstanding the archival process) and CarScanner says they haven’t been cleared in 1500 miles. But maybe the 12v reset can clear out some but not all codes.

The object is to determine if the OBDII and CAN buses are working when the car is in this error state. I'm not sure where the car stores archived DTC's, but being able to read them would indicate that the OBDII port works, the path between the OBD and module that stores them works, and that the module that stores them works.

yeah that makes sense. That’s what I get for skimming your first post before I’ve had coffee. I was just thinking about the codes themselves. I’m really curious to see what this actual error state is, and how the hell the car gets into it.
