Ford Mustang Mach-E Cool Before Charging Consensus 229C81F9-0C99-44C4-BCCF-2B4BCEF48EFD

The manual says “Allowing your battery to cool before charging … improves the longevity of your high voltage battery”. My question is, how long should I wait after returning home before charging?

Obviously variables like ambient temp and how long I was driving need to be taken into account. I was just wondering what everyone’s thinking was on this.

For reference, I don’t have a consistent enough schedule to be able to use the scheduled charging. What I really want is a delay timer. Wait X minutes after plugging in before charging. My ChargePoint doesn’t seem to offer that, nor does the MME.

Thoughts?

As an example, let's say you arrive home at 8pm and don't typically head out for a long drive until 6am.

In this case, setting a charge schedule from 11pm to 5am is probably more than sufficient for your schedule and needs, and gives the vehicle about 3 hours to cool down which seems plenty.

If you set the charge schedule in the vehicle instead of at the EVSE, then if for some reason it's going to take more than the allowed hours to get back to your target charge level, the Mach-E will start charging earlier than your set start time on order to reach the end goal.

On one had this, on the other MME tells us to plug in when ambient temperature is too hot.

10 to 90% is 80% and rule of thumb with 40 amp is around 10% per hour. So 8 hours. 6 am - 8 hours 10 pm should be good without needing to mess with it most of the time (100%). I have mine bracketed just off peak right now but will soon be bracketing it to start later.

How long should we wait at a DCFC before we plug in? ;)

The problem is my arrival and departure times vary widely. Some days I’m working nights some days I’m working mornings. So I can’t just set a fixed time schedule. Also what happens when I get home in the afternoon want to plug-in for a little bit, then go out again in the evening.

You are allowed 2 brackets that may help fit with your schedule. One the car may not be home sometimes. Not sure if you can add more than 2 as I delete the 2nd.

Oh I misread your OP. Yeah in your case I'd not worry about it. Plugin, recharge, relax, and drive. :)

I would let them cool if I could. But I most likely would not wait an hour and go back out to plug it in. A schedule is handy for that.
