I guess there’s no voltage drop with an extension cord? I have a 240v outlet at the end of ~50ft. of 6 AWG wire (that was a fun install :D). At around those distances, voltage drop starts to become a consideration - wondering if an extension cord at the end of the J1772 connector actually doesn’t get impacted because the charger is the one taking all the load and dispersing it…

Anyways, my use case here is I back into my garage, and while the Ford charger reaches the front of the car, I’d love to install a recoil system such that I can just pull down from the center of the garage and plug right in - less wire on the floor, and easy in/out when needed (I’m a volunteer firefighter and sometimes you gotta move quick.)

Thoughts/insights here?

Presuming the wire sizes are the same, the total voltage drop will be the same (for all practical purposes) regardless of which side of the EVSE you extend.

Search the forums here there are people that installed a recoil system just as you describe (mostly in the EVSE threads).

No, the EVSE doesn’t decide on its own how much power to draw. The EVSE and car communicate to determine the maximum amperage they both can handle.
Alternatively, could Ford make a new plug adapter that is meant for dryer outlets which tells the mobile charger to only draw down 24A of current? Since you can switch out the standard and 14-50, im wondering if they could sell this also as an accessory.

being able to control from car is probably ideal but could this also work?

Yes, they could. But the advantage to controlling it in the car is that it would work with any EVSE.

It would likely require both a software and hardware change to the FMC. Currently, it knows which cord is attached by reading the voltage. In order to distinguish between two different 240V cords, some kind of mechanical sensor or switch would be needed.

one more question here - has anyone found a 60 amp rated extension cord? I have been looking but I am unable to find one. Do they not exist?

Thanks all.

Hi all - just bumping this back up - had anyone out there found a 60 amp rated j1772 extension cord ( the one that goes between an evse and then plugs into the MME)? I can't seem to find one. If this doesn't exist is there a reason why?

I don’t think that’s true. I’m pretty sure people have plugged the 120V pigtail into a 240V outlet (likely via sketchy Amazon plug type converters) and charged at 240V X 12A. But that’s heresay. I haven’t tried that.

I know it's been a beat since this was posted but I recently saw this and was curious if you'd taken a look at it or if anyone else had thoughts?
