On some vehicles, faulty on-board charger software (SOBDM) may not respond to elevated charge port temperatures (due to a bad connection) appropriately, causing the charge port to melt. This may cause the vehicle to stop charging and the cable may be difficult to remove if it has melted. The fix will be a powertrain software update at your dealer or via OTA.

REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM
In the affected vehicles, the Battery Charger Control Module (BCCM) software does not have a transfer function that predicts the charging port pin/terminal temperature. Some customers indicate that their battery may not fully charge and/or the charge cord may become stuck in your vehicle. Customers may also experience a burning smell or melting of the charge port pins.
AFAIK we're still waiting for a release in FDRS to fix derate and charge paused problems, so it may not be worth going to your dealer yet. There hasn't been a powertrain OTA mentioning 23B50 in the release notes yet either. Mach-E owners will be notified starting Oct 30th, I would wait until after that date before going to the dealer.

November update: Software for this program is now available. You can either wait for Power-Up 6.6.0 OTA, or get the powertrain updates done at your dealer now.

So it seems vehicles after Nov 22 have an updated SOBDM SW that has that transfer function? It seems odd that Ford took so long to figure out not having it in earlier models would be a problem.

Thankfully mine is build date Dec 1, 22 so supposedly I'm safe from this.

Lee, the CSP mentions the vehicles possibly getting an OTA during the 3rd quarter and for the dealerships to see if this OTA has been downloaded and installed. Does the OTA take the place of the dealership updating the module(s) or would the dealership still need to update the vehicle? If the OTA fully updates the vehicle, do you know which OTA they would be looking for? As always, thanks for the information and the help.

Yes the OTA takes place of the dealer update. But there wasn’t Q3 OTA for the charger, so that’s why I’m a bit confused with this one.

Glad I wasn't only one confused, lol. Thanks for follow-up. Both of mine are within the production window in the CSP. My 2023 was built on 11/14/22. I will keep an eye out for the letters.

... a good reminder to visually inspect condition and cleanlyness of both your vehicle charge port and public charger pins before plugging in, then plugging in firmly until it locks.

debris or worn connectors with poor contact can create arcing, extra heat, and bad things happen fast at >10kW.

Confirmed with Service Manager at my dealership that both my MME's are on the CSP list.

Do you think blowing air from a can would help?

I checked my VIN and it’s on the list - - mine is a November 22 build.

Should we contact the dealer or wait for the letter?

personally I’d rather have an OTA update than go to the dealer

Wait until November, dealer doesn't have an update available yet.
