And yet even in your website example, there are some websites you trust more than others and thus are more likely to do business with.

But again, it’s not just about doing business with the dealer, there’s an actual $$ amount involved that shows what that trust is worth.

For you? Who knows? Maybe you trust no one. But for others, they buy from a dealer and even pay because they trust it’s less likely they’ll get screwed.

Oh and not all dealers get the same level of trust (or $$ premium).

People pay more to buy a used Ford at a Ford dealer. Then slightly less buying a Ford at a non-Ford dealer. And then even less when buying from a dirt lot dealer.

It’s the identical used vehicle too.
Just one more example about how much faith people should have with dealers. I now have 3 orders (2 Mavericks and one MME) at a single dealer. Mavs orders from months ago, MME on 2/17 after talking on the phone with salesman. Literally 6 hours after I placed the order that morning I got a text from the salesman giving me a heads up that he just got out of a meeting where the dealership has decided to no longer accept A/Z plan pricing on any orders including those already placed. He let me know this because he knows I'm Z plan and that we had confirmed just 6 hours prior that the MME would get A/Z plan (X plan was always denied). I was obviously not happy and told him to cancel the MME order and I'd move the 2 Mavs to another dealer that would sign them stating Plan pricing. He called me and asked to give him until the morning to get it sorted out. In the end the custom order manager agreed to take care of MY orders so I went there and had them print out and sign my order saying it gets Plan Pricing.

So yeah, people shouldn't trust dealers too much. I don't even have 100% faith in this signed order sheet but it is the most I can get from this institution.

Oh no doubt we could come up with endless examples of the crap they pull and yet we still keep going back to them.

Stockholm syndrome maybe??

It reminds me a little of Walmart. Everyone loves to talk about how much they hate Walmart and hate shopping there.

And then they go back to shop there every week.

Or even the US government. Most people say they “don’t trust the government.” But yet we disprove that statement by living here, working here, retiring here, putting our entire net worth denominated in US dollars.

I’d say that requires an incredible amount of trust.

I think it’s just like the car dealers. We may know that they’re going to lie to us in order to get more money from us, so we proceed with caution. But after that sale is done, we trust they will deliver a quality product, back it up with service and warranty and take care of us in the future.

No.... We go back to Walmart because all things considered, it's better than not going back.

Also, each specific decision we act upon is separate from others. It's why I shop at Walmart for certain products, Target for certain products, and Sprouts/Albertsons/Safeway/Amazon/etc for others.

Stockholm Syndrome requires a captor but Walmart isn't forcing anyone to go there.

Same is true for car dealerships. I have many options, across many brands. I also have thousands of nearby sellers of used vehicles to choose from, and another option is keeping my vehicle.

I think the current wait realistically is 9 to 12 months for non-EV states.

If their ordering system is anything like Ford, they don’t need you in this equation anymore. Cancelled order will still get delivered.
I put the initial $250 down in March. VW asked for the $450 to "lock" the reservation a couple weeks ago (oh, and the price went up in the mean time). I heard VW doesn't build the car until you lock.

Also, you can usually change which local VW dealer it goes to up until it gets off the ship (but you can't change from an east coast to a west coast dealer because those are different ships).

Ok. So far they'll give me $52k for my Mach E with 17k miles. Pretty close to the CarMax offer I got. They told me I can keep my car until the one I order arrives. Not sure how that will work. Still waiting to hear what "deep discount" they will offer on a GTPE. I figure I have nothing to lose having them put together an offer. I will likely just keep what I have and stay happy.

We were getting hounded by our dealer all the time for us to trade in out Fusion Hybrid. Of course, they wanted us to buy a new car. It's just a sales gimmick, IMHO.
