I have a suspicion that the announcement of the adapter was pushed up, or perhaps making it free was a surprise change, so they just weren’t prepared with stock.

I would think normally they wouldn’t announce it until it was closer to stocked or part way through production.

All a total guess.

Maybe it is related to the previous ( Aug 2023) statements that the Tesla Superchargers were to open to Ford in February 2024. Ford made the announcement it was open on the last day of February 2024(?) in an attempt to meet previous announcements. This was stated regardless of the supply of needed adaptors?

Yeah, and, …

They still haven’t shipped any. They’re the same adapter for everyone of those manufacturers - CCS to Tesla. Still seems to me that by now, they’d be down to at least 90,000 left to go and counting.
Then you've not paid any attention to Tesla's history of promising and then shipping (see: CyberTruck, Roadster, Project juniper...)

I'm permanently stuck on "It's free!"

Ford always said spring of 2024. It was a Tesla employee that made some mention to the effect of the end of February for some charging stations to be available for use. So the announcement date for availability of the adapter was probably forced up due to the Tesla employee making that statement in a public forum. In the meantime Tesla is producing these adapters at their own speed. Ideally Ford would have had at least 20K of these things ready to be shipped as soon as the announcement was made to keep people happy, but that's now how it happened as we now see.

I think you may be on to something. If you watch Tom's interview with Farley on State of Charge you'll see that Farley kinda surprised others at Ford by announcing the adapter would be free to existing customers. So I suspect that's created a few surprises to the implementation team. Also lets not forget that 2024 vehicle production will need adapters too.

This isn't to suggest that it shouldn't have been handled better. It should have. Ford seems to be pretty consistent in over-promising/under-delivering...

That would make sense. Maybe they weren’t really planning to have them available until when/after the new models came out later this year.

So it may have just sort of turned into a logistics nightmare. And the fact that every single car maker all of a sudden decided to make the same flip may put a big demand on some small component like a chip or something that wasn’t being made at nearly the volumes necessary.

I never thought I would have access to the Tesla network. And I never thought I would get the adapter for free. So it seems kind of unfair of me to complain.

But, as always, I want to know those juicy backroom details.
