Disconnnecting Charger While In Use

Page 152 of the Owners Manual indicates that you should not unplug the charger when in use:

WARNING: Do not connect or
disconnect any pluggable component
(connector) of the Ford Mobile Charger
while the IC-CPD (control box) is in use
or charging (connector plug connected
in a socket outlet or the vehicle
connector is engaged in a vehicle inlet).

So, does this mean that you either have to wait for the charger to finish charging or interrupt the process before physically removing the cable...?

You have to manually stop the charging session before unplugging. It is not necessary to wait until the cycle completes itself. This can be done at the charge station, in the car, or in the Fordpass app depending on the type/model of charger.

I believe the manual is saying to ALWAYS pull out the cable coupler from the vehicle's charge port BEFORE disconnecting any other portion of the mobile charger.

The mobile charger has three disconnection points: plug to house outlet, connector from that short cable into the top of the mobile EVSE, and coupler from the long cable into the vehicle.

Always connect in this order:

1. Connector to EVSE.
2. Connector to household outlet.
3. Coupler to vehicle.

Always disconnect in this order:

1. Coupler from vehicle.
2. Connector from household outlet.
3. (optional) Connector from EVSE.

Really? I've been unplugging just fine nothings happened. But if this is true that's just another charging inconvenience on top of all the other ones. Why is it ok for Teslas to unplug directly at any time?

Do you press the button next to the connector first? That will usually stops the charging session as well - I forgot that one. I'm pretty sure the cable is locked until charging is stopped.

This question was about the mobile EVSE bundled with the car, not any other charging equipment.

By the way @Martinmjm, the reason this warning is present is because in order to disconnect the mobile charger from the vehicle, you have to press and hold on the release button to unlatch it and then pull it out.

Immediately upon pressing that unlatch button, charging is stopped. Now as you pull the handle away from the vehicle, there is zero possibility of electrical arcing. This helps prevent carbon pitting from occurring at the connection point and it improves safety compared to either of the other disconnect points (if the vehicle were actively charging while you disconnected them).

On a related note, can you program your vehicle to always charge to 80% no matter which charger it is plugged into, or is this a location-by-location thing...?

As far as I know, the limit has to be set for each new location. To set a limit at a new location, you have to plug in and let it begin charging. Then unplug, find the "previous location" in FordPass or in the car's touch screen, optionally rename it to what you want, and set the limit to what you prefer.
