Does the Mach-E Fly??

Recently I noticed that my dash shows me “Ground Speed.” That made me wonder if my car flies and it changes to “Air Speed!”

lol just wondering why it had to tell me it’s ground speed!!!

Well. Mustangs are horses. Horses don’t fly unless they are Pegasus! So, are Mustang’s becoming Pegasus’s??

It’s an homage to the instrument cluster of its namesake, the p51 mustang, which included ”Ground Speed”. As far as I know this has always been included as a design element in the Ford Mustang

Yep - it's just more information than you need while absolutely correct, and as mentioned is paying homage to the actual impetus for the name: the P-51 mustang (arguably the best piston engine fighter ever made when paired with the Merlin engine).

It's similar to the phrase "at a high rate of speed": speed is already defined to be a rate (distance over time) so the word "rate" is redundant - yet commonly used.

The only way to know for sure would be to hand one over to Bo and Luke. They were more Dodge fans though, so not sure they would allow themselves to be caught in a Ford.

I still find it funny that Ford has identified one of its flagship products with an aircraft from an eventual GM division. The Merlin wasn’t included in the early versions because of politics and licensing. Licensing talks were under way between Packard (a division of GM) and Rolls-Royce long before the first RAF skunkworks conversion happened. ??

Yeah the naming history is pretty interesting.

Clearly the primary source of the name was the horse. You can tell from the horses everywhere on the car. That and the other animal named cars from Ford. Also the “pony” references.

The “ground speed” on some Mustangs is more of a tip of the hat to the plane.
