See the thread title. Would doing this damage the Frunk liner or things on the other side of it due to how much colder dry ice is, or is it safe?

Not planning on trying it, just curious.

How much and for how long?

mid be concerned with the fog interrupting your view out the front windshield in addition to freezing the components near the frunk. You could easily freeze the wiper fluid at least. Maybe some other stuff.

Not sure how much but for a couple hour drive is I guess the situation I was imagining using it for? I would be worried about freezing and damaging nearby components too. @ZuleMME's suggestion to use an ice chest is a good one. If I ever did have to transport something in dry ice that's how I'd do it. Not sure why I didn't think of that haha

I’ve traveled with dry ice in a cooler outside the car before, works great for keeping meat frozen for days. I would not put it in the frunk, I fear that it would crack the plastic. I understand the frunk is just a thick plastic bucket, not a cooler. I threw the used dry ice in a old chlorine bucket with water so the kids could watch it fog. As it fizzled out one of them kicked it and the bucket cracked very easily.

The dry ice won't last long if it's not in an insulated cooler. Yes I'd be worried about making the plastic brittle and condensation/ice forming on the outside of the tub.

Finding a cooler that fits would be the best option.

I would be shocked if someone put a bunch of dry ice in the frunk and nothing went wrong. Regular ice is 32F of course, dry ice is -109F! I work with it at work and we have to be careful it doesn't go in the sink bc it might damage the drain. Maybe in an insulated cooler in the frunk but otherwise no way. Super cold air is also going to be flowing down the drain holes which would probably not be good.

Lol this is silly but we have a newborn baby and the lactation consultants said if we lose power for a long time sticking some dry ice in the freezer (not in contact with the breast milk) will preserve it properly. So I was thinking what if we put the frozen milk and dry ice in the Frunk for traveling. Silly I know. As I said above, if we were going to do that we should have an ice box that it all goes in before going in the Frunk or anywhere else.

Ah, newborn baby. That makes sense.

You aren’t getting any sleep therefore you aren’t thinking straight. ?

As others have said, it’s not insulated. Doesn’t make for a very good cooler.

For the “loss of extended power,” maybe just stock up on extra ice packs to keep in the freezer. We do that during hurricane season here.

If a major storm came through, no clue where we would get dry ice on short notice.

Could this be the long-term solution for overheating Contactors and the 5 second limit? ??
Damn you beat me to it. Electric guys will be icing their cars like ICE cars do at the drag strip.?

So to be clear, your goal is just transporting some dry ice to use at home? Frunk is probably fine for a short time. Put it in a blanket to protect the frunk liner. By the way: dry ice will not “keep” at home. Once you take it away from the store, it will start to sublime. It will also sublime in your freezer. Expect it to be gone in a couple of days. (Make a cool cocktail while you have it though! Just don’t ingest any.)

Whatever you do, don’t seal the dry ice in anything that doesn’t let the gasses escape. That’s called a bomb, and that will void your warranty.
