I do not propose to know what will drive EV Public charging in the future, but I can tell you that today, increasing profits by utilizing ‘real-time vehicle data will play a significantly strategic role.

I will share my recent personal experience to demonstrate.

When you pull up to Level 3 Super-charge at a ‘reasonable’ $0.56 per kWh average, and then roll up to a charger that charges $0.85 per kWh, it is a ‘shock’ to the system.

Just experienced this ‘shock’ on a trip from Orlando to Dallas.

In short, charged 6 times in 1,200 miles, averaging $0.52 per kwh at 5 of those stops, at Electrify America Super-chargers.

I made my 6th, of 6(six) charger stops, at Longview, Tx right off I-20 W.

I stopped at a Shell ‘Red E’ Super-Charger and they charged $0.85 per kWh!

Wanting to find a lower-cost option, I looked at several apps for another Level 3 charger, and found none within 5-20 miles.

At this time, I had 30 miles(less than 10% charge left with 120 miles to go), I needed a charge and do I reluctantly, but necessarily, proceeded to charge.

However, rather than charge to 80% , which had been my process, I only charged to 150 miles, or 50%, and swore Shell “Red E” super-chargers no more!

IMHO, this is a ‘window’ into how the charger network can use data to advantage ‘pricing’ power for profit and still be seemingly competitive with the gas fueling solutions in the EV ‘public’s’ eyes.

.85kWh is CRAZY! Talk about price gauging while on the road. Some gas stations do the same thing in remote areas but it's easy to see the prices on a giant sign. It's not as easy getting the info while driving an EV unless you have a partner to open PlugShare or the provider's app in route.
Did you at least get 150 kW during your charge?

I felt like ‘that guy’, who is rushing to catch a plane, has a rental car to turn in, and did not pay for the ’fuel option’!

Try that on for size and you will find that there are places that do sell gas for $10 a gallon by the airport!?

At least it wasn't 50kWh or below.
We have had to wait hours at L2 charger going 6-9kWh in Lubbock one road trip in 2022 just after we bought the car. Had to do it 4 times total 2 stops each way out an back. I would have happily paid that price to save time. I think that's what they are counting on. Tesla chagers are available in those areas now and I will be using them next time we travel that way.

Wow that’s crazy. And were all the chargers available and functional? If these providers want to charge higher rates make sure availability is there. We have a ways to go to match the convenience of gas stations where gas pumps are always available (except Costco ?). This is one of the paths to more EV adoption: speed and availability of charging for those who can’t do this at home or have long-haul commutes (as we all know).
Last gas fill-up took me 119 seconds for 11 gallons (including transaction time). So if E-providers want to charge higher make them more available and always at least 250 kWh rates to ensure station capacity (even though we/MME are capped at 150 kWh input).

Waiting for other people to finish their charge time AND then your charge time, it really adds up on time wasted. But that’s another rat-hole. ?
Everything else about my EV experience is great! ??

I got charged $0.62/kwh at Tesla in the Phoenix area, two different sites. Here they are higher than EA ($0.56/kwh without Pass+) and EVGO is even higher at $0.65/kwh without a plan.

I got the Bluedot app which offers charging at .25/.30 on evgo/chargepoint and use EA as a last resort now.
