Hi

If the garage has updated all the modules that required an update using FDRS, does that mean those updated modules no longer need to be updated via OTA? I mean, are OTA updates only pushed to modules that haven’t already been updated during a garage visit (via FDRS)?
I had all mine updated two weeks ago but I’m a bit fed up of activating/deactivating the update on the dash hoping there is something pending.

Thanks

Why are you activating / deactivating anything?

Turn on Automatic Updates. Set an update schedule for 1AM daily. Drive the car.

Updates will happen when they are sent to the car. The schedule is for applying Updates that require periods of immobility, otherwise Updates will just happen.

OTA updates won't happen if all the modules they update are current.

The girl from customer support ford told me once that activating/deactivating might trigger the call to internet and check if there are any pending updates (faster than just waiting it magically arrives). Now ofc have no way to validate this …

Keep in mind as well that EU updates are pushed on an entirely different schedule than those in North America. You might check on the regional board in this forum to see what the latest OTA is.

There is no sense in micromanaging and trying to trigger updates all the time. They happen so infrequently and are mostly not noticeable changes. Just forget about it and let them happen whenever they happen.

It’s not like your phone or computer updates where an update is ready on the server side waiting for any device to poll it and download. Ford will push them to each car on their own schedule and not every car gets every OTA update. As long as your car is connected to the internet it should update when there is one is available for your specific car.

It is highly likely that she didn't know what she was talking about. Have you read the multiple sticky post threads about how to get OTAs?

Oh yes all of them … and it’s despairing to see the frequency of updates and how ford manage this.
I have spent the four first month of my Mach e ownership having the main screen keeping randomly to reboot. I think there has been a tsb about that in dec. so definitely if there are updates that fix stuff.

No they are not. FDRS updates modules and the garage will only cover the cost of those module updates required for a repair. Now if you want to pay them lots of money, they might be willing to run every update you want.

However, those FDRS updates are not necessarily the same module updates that will come via OTA.

If you have a particular issue you can take the car in for warranty repair. That is all they will address.

I took my car in for a similar issue, no updates since May 2023. They did all the module updates and asked about my screen freezing. They did TSB-25-2106.

That's completely inaccurate. Just set auto updates and forget it. FDRS supersedes the OTA process, so if they did indeed update everything, you will not see any OTA's until Ford releases something new for your car and it gets sent to you.

I took my car in for a similar issue, no updates since May 2023. They did all the module updates and asked about my screen freezing. They did TSB-25-2106.
Funny, I took my car in this morning for a rattling in the driver-side door (which of course, the service tech said was in my imagination and didn't do any service for it), but the tech said my SYNC screen was "glitching" as he test drove it. The service advisor told me they were doing a software update to correct it. I told her in the 2 1/2 years I've had the car, the screen had NEVER glitched ONCE. Told her you better not be charging me for this. She said there would be no charge and then referenced that TSB (25-2106). When I got the paperwork it said the following modules were "reprogrammed": GWM, APIM, TCU, IPMA, PCM, PSCM and CCM.

Going to the FDRS forum to see if someone can verify this for me. I really didn't appreciate they did this without calling me first. I'm sure it's fine and needed, but the BS about my screen glitching really irked me because I know that's absolutely false.

Mine had been freezing but I chalked it up to wireless car play being weird and didn’t much thought into sync being the issue.

OTA is a VIN lottery. You won't get any updates until Ford releases them for your specific VIN. They release VINs in small batches in case there is an issue with the update, so they don't brick every car at once.

If you want to check your lottery number every second, just click off the update screen and then back on. It will refresh every time the Software Update screen is loaded. No need to change any schedules or settings. (i.e. click "Ford Assistant" then back to "Software Updates" in the Controls screen. You'll see it checks each time)
