Another option to solve this problem is to always back into the garage. Even if the back hatch opens inadvertently, it shouldn't hit anything. This method also makes exiting the garage much safer, because you can see everything that might otherwise be a hazard backing out.
Backing in also puts my charge station adjacent to the Mach-E's charging port.

So I work from home. This means my car is in the garage while I work. Apparently at some point the fob in my pocket triggered my trunk to open.

some of you probably already know where this is going…

The trunk opened up against the backside of the garage door and I was left with this.

now I wait for the body shop to call and give me a quote on fixing it.

My wife on the other hand is finally able to drive my baby. She said given how much I baby this car she wasn’t gonna drive it until I got my first scratch on it.

learn from my experience and just park your car inside your living room and away from the garage door.

The liftgate (trunk) opening on it’s own is a common Mach E issue and to date, Ford will not address it! We have 2 Mach E’s and this has occurred several times in both. Unfortunately, this resulted in about $1,700 worth of damage recently to one of our cars when the garage was closed and we were not home. (We have no pets or rodents.)

We have been to the dealer and spoken with a variety of people at Ford and because the dealer “can’t duplicate it”, it is apparently not considered an issue for Ford. While the cost to repair the damage is certainly a major concern, the real problem here is safety and the potential harm this spontaneous opening can cause. I have 2 year old grandsons who are around our vehicles and they would not necessarily be able to avoid being hit if this were to happen to them.

I have filed a safety report with the NHTSA and contacted a local TV Consumer Complaints Reporter to bring attention to this serious issue. If this has happened to you or does happen to you, please report it to your dealer, Ford and who ever else you think may be able to help resolve this.

I wonder how many of these instances are operator error versus machine error. For instance, yesterday I set off my panic alarm because of something else in my pocket touched the fob. I appreciate a kick sensor that actually works. We have had two other vehicles with kick sensors and they sporadically worked. It would take me three or four attempts to get the trunk to open. Like another owner, I also lowered my hatch opening max height. The negative, of course, is that I routinely hit my head on the inside and get annoyed at myself. I wonder how often I will do it and the answer is ... at least one more time. This is not new technology for Ford or for other car manufacturers and it is not something specific to BEVs. So, if there were a Ford issue, we would see it throughout Ford's and Lincoln's lineups. I'm not doubting anyone who claims that the hatch opened by itself with no human input. It just does not make logical sense to me.

Unfortunately, I have several “non-logical” gouges in my liftgate . . .

I have a couple of sticks that help me align my parking to within an inch or so of the sweet spot to avoid all issues. I set up my alignment one time and then for years I park at that exact same spot. Even if the hatch triggers inadvertently, has happened one time on the MachE, I sleep easy as it will clear everything. The one down side on my Volt was that the same sponge would hit the door at the same spot for about 11 years now and there is a slight matt effect on the gloss finish. You can see it in some angles. But for 11 years of ding free life I will take it.

I am disabling the kick-to-open sensor before I leave the dealer parking lot!
mine only works half the time, but usually I’m not fully loaded that I can’t hit the open button under the trunk lid.
its faster anyway.

I just got the quote now. $600 to fix it.
So I just had this happen to me as well ?. I'm actually glad to see how low the quote is....not pleased, but if they can fix it I may do it.....Just real mad at myself

I went out to car this morning and found the tailgate open on the car that I had heard the walkway notification last night on. Key fob was not in any pocket, safely sitting on a desk. I only wish that securialert had been on at that time to see when it opened.
