I take it you have to plug it into the car and then some sort of prompt will pop up in the car?

Weirdly, no you seem to have to use the FordPass app and not the car. The car seems to only be able to handle Plug&Charge (and even then tell me that it's "out of network" despite activating with Plug&Charge just fine).

As of today (2021/04/05), your two-year free trial of Fordpass Charging Network starts on the date of purchase. So there's no advantage to waiting to activate until you need it.
