It's a cable release but it is also electronically activated. ...
... picture of where this emergency release is behind the bumper?
Here are a couple of picks of the frunk cable release actuator and threads that might be helpful:

The wires are behind the little door on the right side of the bumper cover. The place where many other vehicles have a threaded hole to screw a tow hook in.
Had anybody checked to see behind this black plastic facade to see if the US version happens to still have the tow hook screw in port...not only would this be cool for being able to tow out a vehicle without using the difficult to reach points on the undercarriage (think stuck in snow drift) but also this would solve a lot of people's issues with not wanting to have to have the dealer mounted front license plate for those of us cursed to live in a 2 plate state that enforces it (thinking a platypus mount for a plate using this port for the tow hook).

I haven't looked personally but others have posted that the bumper does not have a threaded hole for a tow hook.

I can't see their being a different frame in the EU vs US versions. That hole would possibly still be there, just covered up by that black plastic facade next to the wires behind the bumper cover plate. Could be wrong, but until I can see a picture of whats behind that black plastic I can have hope.

So I went back and watched one of Sandy Munro's videos, specifically the one dealing with the SORB test. The hole in the passenger side aluminum bumper panel above the louvers for the coolant system for the battery seems to line up with the access port for the emergency frunk open where the wire leads are on the U.S. version.

Hey folks,

I just found out I can open the Frunk with the 5 digit keypad code. o_O

I found that if you enter the code once, the car door pops open, but if you enter the code a second time, immediately after the first time, then the Frunk pops open too. i.e. no need to pull the internal lever twice, etc.

Interesting. I did not know that it would do that and I do not think the dealer salesman knew it either.

Was this in the owner's manual or did I just not read it well enough?

You don't have to enter your code a second time. Just enter your code once and then hit the 7-8 button. I assume your code happens to use that button?

It only works if you have a Job 2 car (until the rest of us get electronic frunk opening enabled).
